Ellen McGrattan is a professor of economics at the University of Minnesota, director of the Heller-Hurwicz Economics Institute, and a consultant at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.[1] In addition, McGrattan serves as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory, a member of the Bureau of Economic Analysis Advisory Committee, a member of the Minnesota Population Center Advisory Board, and President-elect of the Midwest Economics Association.[1]

Education

Ellen McGrattan received her B.S. in economics and mathematics from Boston College.[1] In addition, she received her Ph.D. in economics from Stanford in 1989.[2] McGrattan has taught courses at institutions including Duke University, European University Institute, Stockholm School of Economics, UCLA, University of Pennsylvania, International Monetary Fund, Arizona State University, and Universidade do Minho.[1]

Research

McGrattan's primary research is in the fields of the aggregate effects of monetary and fiscal policy. Particularly she focuses on the effects of GDP, investments, the allocation of hours, the stock market, and international capital flows. Her recent work reexamines some business cycle puzzles in macroeconomics, considering the fact that some investments are unmeasured. Along with colleague Ed Prescott, she has also been analyzing policy reforms related to financing retirement in economies with aging populations.[1] McGrattan has written an extensive amount of articles on these topics topics. She has also hosted many discussions and written many papers on these topics.

In addition, McGrattan's research includes examining cyclical movements, intangible investments, and modeling changes over time.[3] She has also published, contributed to, and written many scholarly works also analyzing sweat equity in U.S. businesses, intangible capital and measured productivity, and what survey data tells consumers about U.S. businesses.[4]
