Early life and education

Perez is of Puerto Rican descent and grew up in the Bronx.[1] In their early photographs, Perez photographed the Bronx punk community that they were a part of, creating an archive the people, places, that made up these peripheral, alternative, and genderqueer spaces. This work and their involvement in these communities continues to influence their work.[10]

Pérez holds a BFA in Photography from Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA in Photography from Yale School of Art. They attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.[11]

Work

As expressed in MoMA PS1's press release, on the occasion of the artist's first museum solo exhibition, Diablo, "Pérez's photographs distill moments of intimacy and emotional exchange: a bloody hand resting between parted legs; the scar gracing a bare chest; twinned rocks nestled against an outcropping; a friend's face grazed by sunlight."[12]

Their solo exhibition include Diablo (2018) at MoMA PS1[12] and Bloom (2018), 47 Canal.[8] Selected group exhibitions include Whitney Biennial (2019), Whitney Museum of American Art,[9] Nobody Promised You Tomorrow: Contemporary Art in the 50th Year of the Stonewall Era (2019), Brooklyn Museum,[13] This is Not a Prop (2018), David Zwirner Gallery,[14] Intimacy (2018), Yossi Milo Gallery [15] and Everyday Muse (2018), LTD Gallery.[16]
