She grew up in Cape Town, South African Republic (now South Africa) from 1898 to 1910. She moved to Hobart, Tasmania in the 1910s, where she met John Curtin. They married in Perth, Western Australia on 21 April 1917. They had two children. John Curtin died in office on 5 July 1945.
