Investigative reportsBill O'ReillySteel published an investigative piece in 2017 with Michael S. Schmidt about sexual misconduct and settlements by former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly called "Bill O’Reilly Settled New Harassment Claim, Then Fox Renewed His Contract". In 2018, her writing received the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service along with Michael S. Schmidt, Jodi Kantor, and Megan Twohey,[4] and the Gerald Loeb Award for Investigative business journalism.[5] This piece received widespread media attention and may have helped lead to O'Reilly's firing from Fox News.[6] BiographySteel was born in Salt Lake City but moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and East Lyme, Connecticut before she graduated from the University of North Carolina. She lives in New York City.[1] Steel says she became interested in journalism after writing a piece in her high school newspaper about how to be happy and grateful in the wake of 9/11; she said a janitor approached her to say her piece had brightened her day, and she knew in that moment she wanted to become a writer.[6] Steel worked at the Wall Street Journal for 8 years, where she shared the 2011 Gerald Loeb Award for Online Enterprise business journalism for "What They Know."[7] She worked for two years at the Financial Times before joining The New York Times in 2014 after Brian Stelter left for CNN.[1][8] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web |url=https://www.nytimes.com/by/emily-steel |title=Emily Steel |date=20 December 2017 |publisher= |via=NYTimes.com}} {{GeraldLoebAward Investigative}}{{GeraldLoebAward News Service, Online, and Blogging}}{{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Steel, Emily}}{{US-journalist-stub}}2. ^1 2 {{cite web |url=https://www.mediaite.com/online/mediaites-75-most-influential-in-news-media-2017/3/ |title=Most Influential in Media 2017 |website=www.mediaite.com}} 3. ^{{Cite news |url=https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/11/vanity-fair-hall-of-fame-the-times-reporters-who-brought-sexual-harassment-out-of-the-shadows |title=Vanity Fair Hall of Fame: The Times Reporters Who Brought Sexual Harassment Out of the Shadows |last=Wolcott |first=James |work=The Hive|access-date=2018-01-18 |language=en}} 4. ^{{Cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/21/business/media/bill-oreilly-sexual-harassment.html |title=Bill O’Reilly Settled New Harassment Claim, Then Fox Renewed His Contract |last=Steel |first=Emily |date=2017-10-21 |work=The New York Times|access-date=2018-01-18 |last2=Schmidt |first2=Michael S. |language=en-US |issn=0362-4331}} 5. ^{{Cite web |url=https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ucla-anderson-school-of-management-announces-2018-gerald-loeb-award-winners-300672056.html |title=UCLA Anderson School of Management Announces 2018 Gerald Loeb Award Winners |date=June 25, 2018 |website=PR Newswire |access-date=January 31, 2019}} 6. ^1 {{Cite news |url=http://www.marieclaire.com/culture/a26757/emily-steel-bill-oreilly/ |title=Meet the Woman Who Took Bill O'Reilly Down |date=2017-04-27 |work=Marie Claire|access-date=2018-01-18 |language=en-US}} 7. ^{{Cite web |url=https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/media-relations/2011/loeb-award-winners |title=Loeb Award Winners |date=June 28, 2011 |website=UCLA Anderson School of Management |access-date=February 2, 2019}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.adweek.com/digital/emily-steel-new-york-times-memo/ |title=Emily Steel Headed to New York Times |publisher=}} 9 : Living people|American business and financial journalists|American women journalists|The New York Times writers|University of North Carolina alumni|Year of birth missing (living people)|Women business and financial journalists|Gerald Loeb Award winners for News Service, Online, and Blogging|Gerald Loeb Award winners for Investigative |
