LifeThe daughter of Christian Kammacher, a farmer, and Catherine Émilie Desplands, she was born in Meyrin. She was educated at the Collège Calvin and went on to study law at Bern; she obtained her license to practice law in 1929. She then moved to Geneva, where she passed her bar examination.[1] She was secretary in 1932 for the Association genevoise pour le suffrage féminin and then was president from 1947 to 1955. She was a member of the committee for the monthly publication Femmes suisses. She lobbied for women's right to vote in Switzerland; when this right was granted for the canton of Geneva in 1960, she ran successfully for a seat on the Grand Council of Geneva. On the council, she lobbied for the rights of the underprivileged. In 1965, she became the first woman to serve as president of a Swiss cantonal council.[1] Kammacher died in Le Grand-Saconnex at the age of 76.[1] She continued to practice law until a few months before her death.[5] Rue Emma-Kammacher in Meyrin was named in her honour.[2] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite web |url=http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/textes/f/F26539.php |title=Kammacher, Emma |work=Dictionnaire historique de la Suisse |language=fr}} {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Kammacher, Emma}}2. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://ge.ch/noms-geographiques/voie/geneve/rue-emma-kammacher |title=Rue Emma-Kammacher |work=Noms géographiques du canton de Genève |language=fr}} 7 : 1904 births|1981 deaths|Swiss lawyers|Swiss feminists|Suffragists|Canton of Geneva politicians|Social Democratic Party of Switzerland politicians |
