It has a single small, smooth leaf with wavy edges and a pale red lower surface, and up to three greenish and white flowers with red or mauve markings. It is distinguished from the other subspecies by the colour of the lower surface of its leaf and by its later flowering period. DescriptionEriochilus dilatatus subsp. brevifolius is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single smooth leaf, {{convert|10-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|4-6|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide. The leaf has a pale red lower surface and wavy edges. Up to three flowers {{convert|10-15|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|9-14|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|50-250|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The flowers are greenish with reddish markings, except for the lateral sepals which are white. The labellum is prominently down-curved and has three lobes with scattered clusters of red and white hairs. Flowering occurs from March to June.[1][2][3]Taxonomy and namingThe blunt-leaved bunny orchid was first formally described in 2006 by Stephen Hopper and Andrew Brown from a specimen collected near the Murchison River.[4] The subspecies epithet (brevifolius) is derived from the Latin words brevis meaning "short"[5]{{rp|708}} and folium meaning "leaf".[5]{{rp|466}} Distribution and habitatThe blunt-leaved bunny orchid grows in scrub and mallee-heath between Cataby and the Murchison River in the Geraldton Sandplains and Yalgoo biogeogrpahic regions.[2][3][6] ConservationEriochilus dilatatus subsp. brevifolius is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife.[6]References1. ^1 {{cite journal |last1=Hopper |first1=Stephen |last2=Brown |first2=Andrew Phillip |title=New and reinstated taxa in Eriochilus |journal=Nuytsia |date=2006 |volume=16 |issue=1 |pages=37–38 |url=https://florabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au/science/nuytsia/449.pdf |accessdate=23 June 2018}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q26325918}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Andrew|last2=Dundas|first2=Pat|last3=Dixon|first3=Kingsley|last4=Hopper|first4=Stephen|title=Orchids of Western Australia|date=2008|publisher=University of Western Australia Press|location=Crawley, Western Australia|isbn=9780980296457|page=257}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Hoffman|first1=Noel|last2=Brown|first2=Andrew|title=Orchids of South-West Australia|date=2011|publisher=Noel Hoffman|location=Gooseberry Hill|isbn=9780646562322|page=222|edition=3rd}} 4. ^1 {{cite web|title=Eriochilus dilatatus subsp. brevifolius|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/615227|publisher=APNI|accessdate=14 July 2018}} 5. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.}} 6. ^1 {{FloraBase|name=Eriochilus dilatatus subsp. brevifolius|id=30432}} 6 : Eriochilus|Orchids of Western Australia|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 1840|Endemic flora of Western Australia|Taxa named by Stephen Hopper |
