It blooms between December and May producing white-cream flowers.[2] E. capillosa is a closely related and very similar to Eucalyptus wandoo. E. capillosa is found further inland than E. wandoo.[3]It is found among decomposing granitic breakaways and on hillsides in the Wheatbelt and western Goldfields regions of Western Australia in gravelly-sandy-loam-clay soils.[2] E. capillosa often forms open woodlands with a diverse understorey. Other species found in the upper storey include; E. salmonophloia and occasionally occurs with E. salubris, E. loxophleba subsp. loxophleba and E. transcontinentalis.[4]The species was first formally described by the botanists Ian Brooker and Stephen Hopper in 1991 as part of the work A taxonomic revision of Eucalyptus wandoo, E. redunca and allied species (Eucalyptus series Levispermae Maiden - Myrtaceae) in Western Australia published in the journal Nuytsia.[5] There are two known subspecies:
