Eucalyptus gypsophila, also known as the kopi mallee,[1] is a mallee that is native to Western Australia[2] and South Australia.

Description

The tree typically grows to a height of {{convert|3|to|6|m|ft|0}} and has persistent rough bark toward the base of the tree[2] with smooth light grey over pinkish grey to coppery cream coloured bark above. The dull blue-grey to grey-green adult leaves are arranged alternately. The leaf blade has a lanceolate shape and a length of {{cvt|7.5|to|13.5|cm}} and a width of {{cvt|1|to|3.5|cm|abbr=on}}) with a base tapering to the petiole and a pointed apex. It blooms between July and December producing inflorescences with cream-white flowers. Each axillary unbranched inflorescence occurs in groups of 7 to 19 per umbel. The obovoid shaped mature buds are {{cvt|0.8|to|1.4|cm|abbr=on}} in length and {{cvt|0.5|to|0.9|cm|abbr=on}} wide with a rounded to conical radially striated operculum.[3]

Taxonomy

The species was first formally described by the botanist Dean Nicolle in 1997 as part of the work A taxonomic revision of the Eucalyptus striaticalyx group (Eucalyptus series Rufispermae: Myrtaceae) as published in the journal Nuytsia. The species is often incorrectly identified as Eucalyptus helmsii or Eucalyptus striaticalyx.[4]

The tree belongs in subgenus Symphyomyrtus section Dumaria to a large sub-group, series Rufispermae, composed of 37 described species and subspecies including Eucalyptus kondininensis, Eucalyptus striaticalyx and Eucalyptus repullulans.[5]

Distribution

E. gypsophila has a range extending from the Pilbara, through the Mid-West and into the Goldfields-Esperance regions and extending through into South Australia.[6] It grows in red sand and clay soils near salt and playa lakes.[2]
