Eucalyptus repullulans, commonly known as chrysoprase mallee,[1] is a mallee that is native to arid parts of Australia.

Description

The mallee or tree typically grows to a height of {{convert|3|to|6|m|ft|0}} with smooth pink and grey bark over cream[2] with either single or multiple stems. The slightly waxy, dull, blue-green adult leaves have a narrow lanceolate to lanceolate shape with a length of {{cvt|125|mm}} and {{cvt|30|mm|abbr=on}} wide.[1] It produces inflorescences with white cream flowers.[2] The inflorescences occur in the axils of the leaves in groups of seven to nine. The waxy buds have a length of around {{cvt|11|mm}} and a width of about {{cvt|6|mm|abbr=on}} and have a round to cone-shaped bud cap that is ribbed with cream flowers. The ovoid shaped seeds are reddish brown and have a reticulated surface. Each seed is around {{cvt|3|mm|abbr=on}} in length and {{cvt|1.5|mm|abbr=on}} wide.[1]

Taxonomy

The species was first formally described by the botanist Dean Nicolle in 1997 s part of the work A taxonomic revision of the Eucalyptus striaticalyx group (Eucalyptus series Rufispermae: Myrtaceae) as published in the journal Nuytsia.[1] The specific epithet is taken from the Latin word repullulans meaning sprouting again in reference to the mallee habit of this species.[1]

The tree belongs in subgenus Symphyomyrtus section Dumaria to a large sub-group, series Rufispermae, composed of 37 described species and subspecies including Eucalyptus kondininensis, Eucalyptus gypsophila and Eucalyptus striaticalyx.[2]

Distribution

It is endemic to the Pilbara region of Western Australia[3] and the central ranges in north western South Australia where it is found on mountain and hills slopes and summits[3] growing in rocky skeletal soils often among outcrops of chrysoprase.[4]
