The bark is dark grey to black in colour usually rough and deeply fissured. Adult leaves are opposite, and bluish in colour with an orbicular or broadly lanceolate shape. The leaves are stalkless, stem-clasping or heart-shaped at the base. The blade is {{convert|5|to|9|cm|in|2}} long and {{convert|2.5|to|8|cm|in|2|abbr=on}} wide with new growth a silver to blue-grey colour.[1] The tree blooms between March and May producing creamy yellow flowers that are about {{convert|2|cm|in|2|abbr=on}} in diameter and appear in clusters of three to seven with several clusters forming panicles. Fruits form later in the form of capsules that are egg-shaped, bluish in colour, usually ribbed, with a length of {{convert|7|to|12|mm|in|2}} and a width of {{convert|6|to|10|mm|in|2|abbr=on}} and with enclosed valves.[1] TaxonomyThe species was first formally described by the botanist [[Joseph Maiden in 1923 as part of the work A Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus.[3] The specific epithet honours John Shirley, an educationist and scientist, who also served as on the council of the Royal Society of Queensland for 33 years and was twice President.[4] DistributionThe species is found in eastern parts of North Queensland and southern parts of Far North Queensland with a scattered distribution through coastal areas that are further south.[3] See also
