Established in 1998 as the European branch of The International Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), SIOPE became an independent organisation with a permanent office in Brussels (Belgium) in 2007.[1] ActivitiesSIOPE aims to support education for health professionals and facilitate new drugs development by participating in EU-funded projects such as: The Joint Action on Rare Cancers (JARC)[2] or The European Reference Network on Paediatric Cancer (ERN PaedCan)[3]. SIOPE led the preparation of the ‘European Standards of care for Children with Cancer’, a document that was published in 2009 and translated into 21 languages.[4] SIOPE has also been involved in several discussions with EU policy-makers on the revision and assessment of EU legislation on paediatric medicines. Every year, SIOPE marks the International Childhood Cancer Day, which is a one-day event organised at the European Parliament in Brussels, in order to raise awareness on the growing challenges posed by this disease. [5] The Strategic PlanOn 18 November 2015, the SIOPE Strategic Plan ‘A European Cancer Plan for Children and Adolescents’ was officially launched at the European Parliament during a key event hosted by MEP Alojz Peterle and co-organised by SIOPE and the ‘MEPs Against Cancer’ Group.[6] The main goal of the plan is to improve both the cure rate and the quality of life for survivors of childhood cancer, with the ultimate aim of increasing disease-free and late-effect free survival. This document presents the 7 medical and scientific objectives that should be achieved for the next decade in order to increase the cure rate and the quality of survivorship for children and young people with cancer.[7] References1. ^1 {{cite journal|last1=Vaasal|first1=Gilles|last2=Fitzgerald|first2=Edel|last3=Schrappe|first3=Martin|title=Challenges for Children and Adolescents With Cancer in Europe: The SIOP-Europe Agenda|journal=Pediatric Blood & Cancer|date=2014|volume=61|issue=9|pages=1551–1557|doi=10.1002/pbc.25044|pmid=24706509|pmc=4285788}} 2. ^{{cite web|last1=Andriukaitis|first1=Vytenis|title=EUROPEAN SOCIETY FOR PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY (SIOPE) DAY, EUROPEAN CANCER CONGRESS – AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS – 27 JANUARY 2017|url=https://ec.europa.eu/commission/commissioners/2014-2019/andriukaitis/announcements/european-society-paediatric-oncology-siope-day-european-cancer-congress-amsterdam-netherlands-27_en|website=European Commission|publisher=European Commission|accessdate=21 November 2017|date=2017-01-27}} 3. ^{{cite web|last1=Ladenstein|first1=Ruth|title=A cross-border healthcare network to cure childhood cancers|url=https://www.theparliamentmagazine.eu/articles/partner_article/siope/cross-border-healthcare-network-cure-childhood-cancers|website=The Parliament Magazine|accessdate=21 November 2017}} 4. ^{{cite journal|last1=Kowalczyk|first1=Jerzy|last2=Samardakiewicz|first2=Marzena|last3=Fitzgerald|first3=Edel|title=Towards reducing inequalities: European Standards of Care for Children with Cancer|journal=European Journal of Cancer|date=2013|volume=50|issue=3|pages=481–485|doi=10.1016/j.ejca.2013.11.004|pmid=24300454|url=http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959804913009994#!|accessdate=21 November 2017}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.theparliamentmagazine.eu/articles/partner_article/siope/international-childhood-cancer-awareness-day-2016|website=The Parliament Magazine|accessdate=21 November 2017|title=International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day 2016}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=SIOPE – MAC Launch: European Cancer Plan for Children and Adolescents|url=http://www.europeancancerleagues.org/mac/mac-events/400-siope-mac-launch-european-cancer-plan-for-children-and-adolescents.html|website=The Association of European Cancer Leagues|publisher=The Association of European Cancer Leagues|accessdate=21 November 2017}} 7. ^{{cite journal|last1=Vassal|first1=Gilles|last2=Schrappe|first2=Martin|last3=Pritchard-Jones|first3=Kathy|last4=Arnold|first4=Fréderic|last5=Basset|first5=Luisa|title=The SIOPE strategic plan: A European cancer plan for children and adolescents|journal=Journal of Cancer Policy|date=2016|volume=8|pages=17–32|doi=10.1016/j.jcpo.2016.03.007|url=http://www.journalcancerpolicy.net/article/S2213-5383(16)30001-7/abstract|accessdate=21 November 2017}} External links
