}}Everlane is a United States clothing retailer that sells primarily online. The organization is headquartered in San Francisco, California and also has a store in New York City.[1]

History

Everlane was founded in 2010 by Michael Preysman and Jesse Farmer as an online menswear retailer.[2] By 2015 the company had received $1.1 million in seed funding.[3] Everlane started with a referral invite list that gained 60,000 subscribers in 5 days although the company only had 1,500 T-shirts in inventory.[4] In 2012, Everlane opened a pop-up shop in New York for two weeks during the holidays.[5]

The company was founded to sell basic stylish apparel at relatively low prices[2][6] with transparent pricing.[7][8][9] Everlane is committed to 'radical transparency'.[10] Michael Preysman and his team puts emphasis on using their website and social media handles to offer their customers to learn about their factories, their employees, and the price breakdown of each product. Customers can get a glimpse into the company's supply chain and factories.[11]

In 2014, Everlane began a partnership with delivery company Postmates to provide same-day delivery to consumers in San Francisco and New York.[12]

Everlane launched a mobile app in 2015. The app features the current weather updates in order to provide suggestions for what to wear alongside the weather descriptions.[13]

Everlane introduced a new sale model that happens twice a year for their overstocked items, in which they call "Choose What You Pay".[14] This allows shoppers to choose one of three prices on their own for certain merchandise[15]. If customers choose to pay the lowest price for the item, Everlane gets 10% of the profits, which only covers the shipping and development costs of the product[16]. If customers choose to pay more, it helps the brand cover any overhead costs and the money goes to the company's future product development.[15] Preysman, CEO of Everlane, spoke to Buzzfeed and explained "Choose What You Pay" as another method to make the brand more transparent.[15]

The company opened permanent stores in SoHo in New York City in 2017 and in San Francisco in 2018.[17][18][19]

The brand expanded into denim in 2017, after Preysman delayed the launch until the company could find a factory that met the company's sustainability standards. Head of product, Kim Smith, eventually found one in Vietnam that recycles 98% of the water used in denim manufacturing and turns any chemicals used in the process into bricks for constructing affordable houses.[10] The brand also revealed the entire production process through pictures and stories for several weeks before the launch of denim on their website.

In 2018, the company pledged to stop using virgin plastic, including in packaging and in clothing made of synthetic fibers.[20]

In mid-October, 2018, the company announced a plan to eliminate all newly-manufactured plastic from its supply chain by 2021, which started with the launch of ReNew.[21] On October 24, 2018, Everlane launched ReNew, a line of outerwear crafted from materials that were created out of 3 million recycled plastic bottles.[21] The company plans to accomplish their goal by redeveloping the fabrics, yarns, and all raw materials that contain synthetic fibres into recycled components instead.

Publicity

The brand has received publicity via actress Angelina Jolie, who has been seen wearing Everlane loafers[22] and carrying an Everlane tote bag.[23] Model Gigi Hadid has worn Everlane sneakers.[24] The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has been photographed wearing an Everlane cashmere sweater.[25]

Awards and honors

In 2015, founder Michael Preysman was included in Forbes' 30 Under 30 for his work on the firm in "reinventing retail and E-Commerce."[26]
