{{pp-protect|small=yes}}Yazidi ({{lang-ku|Êzdîkî}}, meaning: "the Yazidi language") is a glossonym for Kurmanji Kurdish coined by some Yazidis{{who|date=March 2019}} to erase any affiliation with Kurds. Êzdîkî is no different from Kurmanji Kurdish.[1][2][3][4][5]

History

{{stub section|date=March 2019}}{{pov section|date=March 2019}}

In 1895, during his research trips, the anthropologist Ernest Chantre visited the Yazidis in today's Turkey. He reports about it as follows:[6]

{{Quote|text="Both speak Kurmanji (Yazidis and Kurds), but the Yazidis call their language « zyman e ezda » (the language of the Yazidis) and say that the Kurds are the ones who speak their language, and they are not the ones who speak the language of the Kurds."}}

On May 1, 2007, according to a report from the Human Rights Watch from November 2009, two members of the Yazidi Movement for Reform and Progress have been abducted by the Kurdish security organization Asayish of the KRG. The security forces tortured the two Yazidis. A Yazidi was asked by the security forces during the interrogation, "What language do you speak?" The Yazidi answered "Yazidi", then the security forces said, "No, Yazidis have no language. Yazidis speak Kurdish." And then they continued to torture the Yazidis.[7]

Status in Armenia

On January 25, 2002, Armenia ratified the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and placed Kurdish under state protection.[8] However, because of the divided Yazidi community in Armenia and after strong criticism from parts of the community, the authorities chose to ratify the charter by mentioning both "Kurdish" and "Yezidi" as two separate languages.[9] This resulted in the term Êzdîkî being used by some researchers when delving into the question of minority languages in Armenia, since most Kurdish-speakers in Armenia are from the Yazidi group.[10] As a consequence of this move, Armenian universities offer language courses in both Kurmanji and Êzdîkî as two different dialects.[11]
