}}Ezekiel 33 is the thirty-third chapter of the Book of Ezekiel in the Hebrew Bible or the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. This book contains the prophecies spoken by the prophet Ezekiel, and is a part of the Books of the Prophets.[1]

Text

The original text is written in Hebrew language. This chapter is divided into 33 verses.

Textual versions

Some ancient witnesses for the text of this chapter in Hebrew are of the Masoretic Text, which includes the Codex Cairensis (895), the Petersburg Codex of the Prophets (916), Aleppo Codex (10th century), Codex Leningradensis (1008).{{sfn|Würthwein|1995|pp=35-37}}

There is also a translation into Koine Greek known as the Septuagint, made in the last few centuries BC. Extant ancient manuscripts of the Septuagint version include Codex Vaticanus (B; B; 4th century), Codex Sinaiticus (S; BHK: S; 4th century), Codex Alexandrinus (A; A; 5th century) and Codex Marchalianus (Q; Q; 6th century).{{sfn|Würthwein|1995|pp=73-74}}

Verse 7

"So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel;

therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me." (NKJV)[2]

  • "Son of man" (Hebrew: בן־אדם {{Strong-number|ḇen|H|01121}}-{{Strong-number|'ā-ḏām|H|00120}}): this phrase is used 93 times to address Ezekiel.{{sfn|Bromiley|1995|p=574}}
  • "Watchman" (Hebrew: צָפָה {{Strong-number|tsō-p̄eh or tsa-phah|H|06822}}): the noun is derived from the Hebrew verb meaning to "look out or about, spy, keep watch"; properly "to lean forward", i.e. "to peer into the distance"; by implication, "to observe, await:—behold, espy, look up (well), wait for, (keep the) watch(-man)".{{sfn|Brown|1994|"צָפָה"}}{{sfn|Gesenius|1979|"צָפָה"}}

Verse 21

And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month,

that one who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said,

"The city has been captured!" (NKJV)[3]

  • "The city has been captured" from the Hebrew sentence הכתה העיר huk-kə-ṯāh hā-'îr. The first word is derived from the verb נָכָה {{Strong-number|nâ-kâh|H|05221}}, meaning "to smite", "to strike" mostly "in the sense of hurting."{{sfn|Brown|1994|"נָכָה"}}{{sfn|Gesenius|1979|"נָכָה"}} The second word means "the city" (עיר {{Strong-number|iyr|H|05892}} means "city, town, abode of men"){{sfn|Brown|1994|"עִיר"}}{{sfn|Gesenius|1979|"עִיר"}}

The date corresponds to January 8, 585 BCE, based on the analysis by Bernhard Lang.[4]

Verse 24

"Son of man, they who inhabit those ruins in the land of Israel are saying, 'Abraham was only one, and he inherited the land. But we are many; the land has been given to us as a possession.'" (NKJV)[5]
