Ezekiel 39 is the thirty-ninth chapter of the Book of Ezekiel in the Hebrew Bible or the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. This book contains the prophecies spoken by the prophet Ezekiel, and is a part of the Books of the Prophets.[1] The previous and this chapter form a section dealing with "Gog, of the land of Magog."{{sfn|Clements|1996|p=170}}

Text

The original text is written in Hebrew language. This chapter is divided into 29 verses.

Some ancient witnesses for the text of this chapter in Hebrew are of the Masoretic Text, which includes the Codex Cairensis (895), the Petersburg Codex of the Prophets (916), Aleppo Codex (10th century), Codex Leningradensis (1008).{{sfn|Würthwein|1995|pp=35-37}}

There is also a translation into Koine Greek known as the Septuagint, made in the last few centuries BC. Extant ancient manuscripts of the Septuagint version include Codex Vaticanus (B; B; 4th century), Codex Sinaiticus (S; BHK: S; 4th century), Codex Alexandrinus (A; A; 5th century) and Codex Marchalianus (Q; Q; 6th century).{{sfn|Würthwein|1995|pp=73-74}}

  • "Son of man" (Hebrew: בן־אדם {{Strong-number|ḇen|H|01121}}-{{Strong-number|’ā-ḏām|H|00120}}): this phrase is used 93 times to address Ezekiel.{{sfn|Bromiley|1995|p=574}}
  • "Rosh" (Hebrew: ראש {{Strong-number|rōsh|H|07218}}): can also be translated as "head" (of human and animal); "top" (of the mountain); "beginning" (of time); "river-head"; "chief" (as in "chief-prince", "chief-priest", head of the family).{{sfn|Brown|1994|"רוּחַ"}}{{sfn|Gesenius|1979|"רוּחַ"}} In conjunction to the preceding word "prince", most English Bibles translates them as "chief prince."[3]

Verse 25

Therefore thus says the Lord God: ‘Now I will bring back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name’ (NKJV)[4]

  • "Now I will bring back" (Hebrew: עתה אשיב {{Strong-number|‘at-tāh|H|06258}} {{Strong-number|’ā-shîḇ|H|07725}}): denoting restoration before the end times.[5]
