It was originally known under its Albanian title "Përrallë". The song represented Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 after winning Festivali i Këngës 54.[1] ReleaseThe official version of "Përrallë" (remastered and translated to English) was released in Europe along with a music video on March 13, 2016 via EBU.[2] Meanwhile, the Albanian counterpart remained in its original master recording and the video is available only from the live performance at the Festivali i Këngës. The remixed dance version of "Fairytale" was released on August 1, 2016.[3] Critical reception"Fairytale" received generally positive reviews from contemporary critics and mixed-to-negative remarks from Eurovision fansites. Among others, Caroline Westbrook of Metro wrote: "If James Bond were to have an Albanian makeover and pursue bad guys through the streets of Tirana, we reckon this might just be his theme tune [4], while Michael Carr from Music Feeds dubbed the singer as an "over the top emotive diva" and added: "Considering Dami Im is following a similar music path with her offering this year, she better watch out for Eneda Tarifa". [5] Among various Eurovision fansites, the Albanian version of the song was viewed favourably but the English version was met with adverse criticism. Many considered that the song should have been presented in Albanian language, whilst dubbing the English version as a "bad revamp". Music videoThe video begins with an ambiguous imagery of Eneda's face covered in a red pleat headdress while standing in front of an illuminated stairway. After uncloaking, the video follows with a theatrical scenery depicting a massive surreal clockwork as a background and then an outdoor scene of Eneda on a swing while sitting in seiza position. Those three scenes are intercut throughout the video. Remix versionThe remixed dance version of "Fairytale" was released six months later and premiered simultaneously on RTSH with an accompanying video which is a collection of Eneda's Eurovision performance, her promotional tours in Israel, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom, as well as behind-the-scenes footage detailing. Although it was not commercially released, the remix received moderate airplay nationwide. Eurovision PerformanceEneda performed the song along with three backing vocalists on the main stage. A warm atmosphere was created by a "gold-ground" backdrop and theatrical smoke which gave the act a soft focus effect. Eneda wore a long golden dress with a chapel train that "united" with the golden centre of the stage floor when filmed from above.[6] "Fairytale" was performed seventeenth during the second semi-final held on May 12, 2016, at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden, but did not qualify for the grand final.
