LifeHurtado was born on 8 May 1951 in Valencia, Spain.{{r|arbol}} He earned his Ph.D. degree from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona in 1993 under the supervision of Oriol Serra Albó; his dissertation was Problemas geométricos de visibilidad [Geometric problems of visibility].{{r|mathgen}} It won the Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado UPC in 1995.{{r|urrutia}} He became a professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and died on 2 October 2014 in Barcelona.{{r|ob}} ContributionsHurtado was a pioneer of Spanish computational geometry, and of connections between computational geometry and combinatorics. He is known, not only for his own research contributions to those subjects, but also for the questions he posed for others to solve. The topics of his research included flip graphs of polygon triangulations, Voronoi diagrams, visibility, simple polygons with given points as vertices, empty convex polygons in point sets, geometric graph theory, and problems on colored sets of points.{{r|urrutia|special|cg61}} RecognitionIn 2018, the journal Computational Geometry published a special issue in Hurtado's memory.{{r|special}} References1. ^{{cite journal | last1 = Ábrego | first1 = Bernardo | last2 = Dumitrescu | first2 = Adrian | last3 = Fernández | first3 = Silvia | last4 = Tóth | first4 = Csaba D. | date = June 2015 | doi = 10.1145/2789149.2789162 | issue = 2 | journal = SIGACT News | pages = 65–77 | title = Computational geometry column 61 | volume = 46}} [1][2][3][4][5]2. ^{{MathGenealogy|id=93730|name=Ferran Hurtado}} 3. ^{{cite news| author =| title = FERRAN HURTADO DÍAZ : Fallecimiento| url = https://enmemoria.lavanguardia.com/fallecimiento/ferran-hurtado-diaz/39240727| work = La Vanguardia| language = Catalan| date = 3 October 2014| access-date = 18 June 2018}} 4. ^{{cite journal | last1 = Bose | first1 = Prosenjit | author1-link = Jit Bose | last2 = Ramos | first2 = Pedro | date = March 2018 | doi = 10.1016/j.comgeo.2017.10.001 | journal = Computational Geometry | page = 1 | title = Editorial: Special issue in memory of Dr. Ferran Hurtado | volume = 68}} 5. ^{{cite conference | last = Urrutia | first = Jorge | authorlink = Jorge Urrutia Galicia | editor1-last = Akiyama | editor1-first = Jin | editor1-link = Jin Akiyama | editor2-last = Ito | editor2-first = Hiro | editor3-last = Sakai | editor3-first = Toshinori | editor4-last = Uno | editor4-first = Yushi | contribution = The Mathematics of Ferran Hurtado: A Brief Survey | doi = 10.1007/978-3-319-48532-4_25 | pages = 277–292 | publisher = Springer | series = Lecture Notes in Computer Science | title = Discrete and Computational Geometry and Graphs 18th Japan Conference, JCDCGG 2015, Kyoto, Japan, September 14-16, 2015, Revised Selected Papers | volume = 9943 | year = 2016}} }} External links
