In their fifth year under head coach Henry L. Williams, the Golden Gophers compiled a 13–0 record (3–0 against Western Conference opponents).[1] The 1904 Minnesota team has been recognized as a college football national champion by the Billingsley Report.[2] The 146 point victory over Grinnell represents both the largest point total and the largest margin of victory in Gopher football history.[3] Ten Minnesota players were recognized on the 1904 All-Western college football team: quarterback Sigmund Harris (COL-2, CT-2, MJ-1); halfbacks Otto Nelson Davies (COL-1, CT-2, MJ-1) and James Edward Kremer (COL-2); fullback Earl Current (CT-2, MJ-1); end Bobby Marshall (COL-2, MJ-1); tackles Percy Porter Brush (CRH, CT-2, MJ-2) and George Leland Case (MJ-2); guards Walton W. Thorpe (COL-1, CRH, CT-1, DFP, DT, MJ-1, SLR, WC) and Daniel D. Smith, Minnesota (CT-2); and center Moses Strathern (MJ-1).[4][5][6][7][8][9] Two players also received recognition on the 1904 College Football All-America Team. Quarterback Sigmund Harris received third-team honors from Walter Camp, and guard Walton Thorp received first-team honors from Illinois coach Fred Lowenthal and third-team honors from Walter Camp.[10][11][12] Schedule{{CFB schedule|{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 17 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Twin Cities Central High | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 107–0 | attend = 3,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 24 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1904|team=South Dakota Coyotes|title=South Dakota}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 77–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 28 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Shattuck | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 75–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 1 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1904|team=Carleton Knights|title=Carleton}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 65–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 5 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1904|team=St. Thomas Tommies|title=St. Thomas (MN)}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 47–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 8 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1904|team=North Dakota Flickertails|title=North Dakota}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 35–0 | attend = 2,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 15 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Iowa State | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 32–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 22 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1904|team=Grinnell Pioneers|title=Grinnell}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 146–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 29 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = Nebraska | gamename = rivalry | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 16–12 | attend = 12,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 5 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1904|team=Lawrence Vikings|title=Lawrence}} | site_stadium = Northrop Field | site_cityst = Minneapolis, MN | score = 69–0 | attend = }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 12 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Wisconsin | gamename = rivalry | site_stadium = Randall Field | site_cityst = Madison, WI | score = 28–0 | attend = 18,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 19 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Northwestern | site_stadium = Sheppard Field | site_cityst = Evanston, IL | score = 17–0 | attend = 11,000 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 24 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Iowa | gamename = rivalry | site_stadium = Iowa Field | site_cityst = Iowa City, IA | score = 11–0 | attend = }} }} References1. ^{{cite web|title=1904 Minnesota Golden Gophers Schedule and Results|publisher=Sports Reference LLC|work=SR/College Football|accessdate=November 1, 2017|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/minnesota/1904-schedule.html}} {{Minnesota Golden Gophers football navbox}}{{College Football National Champion pre-AP Poll navbox}}{{Big Ten Conference football champions}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2015/FBS.pdf |title=National Poll Rankings |author=National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) |year=2015|work=NCAA Division I Football Records |publisher=NCAA |page=108 |accessdate=January 4, 2016 |format=PDF}} 3. ^{{cite book | last = General Alumni | title = History | pages = 92}} 4. ^{{cite book|title=Collier's Self Indexing Annual|page=674|year=1905|publisher=P.
