In April 2017, she was appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for European and Russian Affairs on his National Security Council staff.[1][2] Hill was born in Bishop Auckland in northern England to a coal miner and a nurse. She studied at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and Harvard University, where she gained her master's degree in Russian and modern history 1991, and her PhD in history under Richard Pipes, Akira Iriye, and Roman Szporluk in 1998, respectively. While at Harvard she was a Frank Knox Fellow. She worked in the research department at the John F. Kennedy School of Government from 1991 to 1999 and at the National Intelligence Council as national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia from 2006 to 2009. She is currently on leave of absence from the Brookings Institution, where she is director for the Center on the United States and Europe, while serving on the staff of the U.S. National Security Council.
