It lies within the parish of Llantwit Major, to the north of the town off the B4265 road, {{convert|4.25|mi}} south-southwest of Cowbridge. It is divided into Little Frampton and Great Frampton.[1] HistoryThe settlement's name is believed to be named after Adam De Francton, an English knight who killed Llewelyn, the last Prince of Wales.[2] The hamlet became known for its Frampton Herd of Pedigree Aberdeen Angus.[3] Great FramptonThe hamlet contains the ruins of Great Frampton, a Grade II listed country house which is located about {{convert|1300|m}} northwest of the Church of St. Illtyd. The house was built around 1600, with a front added in the late 18th century.[4] An inventory of the house was made in 1636 upon the death of Mary Jones, a widow who owned the property at the time.[5] In the 1770s, the astronomer Nathaniel Pigott stayed at Frampton and built an observatory.[2] The house is of three storeys, with a front elevation containing five bays.[4] It was badly damaged in a fire in 1994.[6] It gutted the main block, but the rear wing, dated to the 17th century and altered in the mid 20th century, still remains, though in a derelict state.[4] {{-}}References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/22986|title=Frampton, Glamorgan|publisher=Visionofbritain.org.uk|accessdate=24 March 2016}} {{Vale of Glamorgan}}2. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.welshruins.co.uk/photo2076258.html|title=GREAT FRAMPTON, Llantwit Major, South Glamorgan 2005|publisher=Welshruins.co.uk|accessdate=24 March 2016}} 3. ^{{cite book|title=Country Life|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=nBIkAQAAMAAJ|date=July 1966|page=428}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/wa-13300-great-frampton-llantwit-major|title=Great Frampton, Llantwit Major|publisher=British Listed Buildings|accessdate=24 March 2016}} 5. ^{{cite book|title=An Inventory of the Ancient Monuments in Glamorgan|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=dKp1tps9yMcC&pg=PA248|date=1 January 1988|publisher=Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales|isbn=978-0-11-300020-3|page=248}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/Documents/Living/Planning/Listed%20Buildings/Buildings_at_Risk_Strategy_March_2013.pdf|title=Buildings at Rish Rescue and Strategy|publisher=Vale of Glamorgan County Council|date=March 2013|accessdate=24 March 2016}} 6 : Villages in the Vale of Glamorgan|Country houses in Wales|Houses in the Vale of Glamorgan|Grade II listed buildings in the Vale of Glamorgan|Grade II listed houses|Farms in the Vale of Glamorgan |
