Advocacy for First AmericansFances Broaddus Crutchfield is an advocate for Native Americans.[7][8] She wrote "Saving the Mattaponi" to raise funds for the tribe.[9][10] She read her poem "Mantle", based on the design of a monument tribute to American Indians, on station WTVR in Richmond, Virginia[11] and other Virginia stations.[12][13] JournalismShe has published articles in the Richmond Free Press[14] and many OpEd pieces in the Richmond Times-Dispatch[15] and other publications.[16] Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield was awarded first place for speech/speeches, third place for feature story (8C) – online publication, and third place for books and creative writing (61A) – creative verse, single poem. ActingBroaddus-Crutchfield began public speaking and acting after finishing her studies at Columbia University. She worked in theater in Maine and New York before returning to Virginia in 1970. At Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury near Irvington, she was the featured speaker on "Sold Out Shadows: Indians and the American Revolution" for a meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was honorary regent of the William Byrd Chapter, District II membership chairman.[17] VolunteerismShe serves on the board of Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care.[18] VIPCare is an interfaith, not-for profit counseling and educational institute and one of the oldest leading pastoral counseling centers in the nation. VIPCare is accredited by the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and is a recipient of the Distinguished Program Leadership Award. The solar farm was a natural outcome of her interest in environmental activism and clean energy.[19] Political activityBroaddus-Crutchfield is active in Democratic Politics.[20] Broaddus-Crutchfield is a member of Liberal Women of Chesterfield County (LWCC), an organization of activists lobbying for the Democratic Party in Chesterfield County, Virginia and elsewhere.[21][22] As a Democrat and a member of LWCC, she lobbys for causes in which she believes.[23] She engages in canvassing for candidates in Chesterfield County and is one of the largest donors to Democratic national, state, and local candidates.[24][25] She is an environmental activist involved in protecting the rights of property owners and is a strong poponent of the Equal Rights Amendment. In February 2020 she read a statement in front of the Virginia capitol building, addressed to Republicans in the Virginia General Assembly in which she said, "“Stop killing democracy. . . .End your long-term obstruction of the Equal Rights Amendment.” News reports stated, "Broaddus-Crutchfield said she’s been fighting for the ratification of the ERA since the 1970s, when Congress sent it to the states for ratification. Advocates say one more state is needed to add the amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Opponents say the deadline to ratify has expired."[26] BiographyIn an OpEd piece to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield discussed the best advice she'd ever been given.[27] In her extended family relationships, in the early 19th century, Edmund Ruffin, a wealthy slaveholder and soil conservationist, experimented with earth rejuvenation on his farm along the Pamunkey River in Hanover County, Virginia "spreading a combination of clay and lime called marl on his fields." Francis's son, Henry Broaddus, is the great-great-great grandson of Andrew Ruffin, the original owner of the land which is now the site of a new solar farm. Francis and Henry, partnering with SunEnergy1 of North Carolina, proposed a 222-acre solar facility on the family farm along U.S. 360 near the King William County line. Henry is a vice-president for strategic initiatives and public affairs at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia. EducationFrancis attended St. Catherine's School in Richmond. She holds a bachelor's degree from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a master's in theater arts from Columbia University.[17] Meade BroaddusThe Broaddus farm was where her son Henry's father, Meade Broaddus, said his last goodbye. He was killed in a car accident in 1976, when Henry was five months old.[28] George CrutchfieldShe married George Crutchfield in 1995, and he shared Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield's charitable interests. In 2010 he supported her efforts as Powhatan Christmas Mother of the Year.[29] She made a large gift to VCU Medical Center's Pauley Heart Center.[30] Broaddus-Crutchfield said that George Crutchfield, the Director of the VCU School of Mass Communications for many years, who died in March 2011, had already experienced two open heart surgeries by the time she met and married him. “Were it not for the doctors in the [VCU] Pauley Heart Center, most especially Dr. [Michael] Hess, I would not have had a second married life,” she said. Dr. Hess was the first president of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), credited with starting the ISHLT at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association in 1981. “I would not have known him had they not been able to save him.” Before Crutchfield died, the family hosted a luncheon at VCU Medical Center Hospital to celebrate the long doctor-patient relationship. There she read a poem which she had written honoring Dr. Hess. The annual lecture series begun by her gift supports and advances education in heart failure. "[Dr. Crutchfield and I] were doctor, patient and friends for 34 years," said Dr. Hess, VCU Clinical Professor of Medicine and a noted heart failure and heart transplantation scholar. "[Dr. Crutchfield] was a brilliant man, who built one of the more distinguished schools of mass communications in the world." [Mrs. Crutchfield's] gift as a tribute to her husband combined medicine, cardiology, education, and communication, all of which were of importance to the life of Dr. Crutchfield. "I am delighted with this gift that will allow us to ensure the intellectual collaboration and stimulation of bringing the top experts in heart failure and heart transplantation to interact with our physicians," said Dr. Kenneth Ellenbogen, Chair of Cardiology Division, Pauley Heart Center.
