She has two sisters and four brothers. When she was three years of age, her family relocated to "Lushoto Village", in the Usambara Mountains, close to a national park. Here, she grew up under the influence of her grandfather, who inspired her to study physics and engineering.[2] She was admitted to the University of Dar es Salaam, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. She continued her studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she studies for a Master of Science (MSc) in Transportation, from 1984 graduating in 1986. She followed that up with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil Engineering, from 1987 graduating in 1990.[2] Work experienceShe started out at the World Bank in 1994, based in Washington, DC, working there for the next 15 years.[2] She worked in various roles including as Director of Infrastructure, in 2000 for a period of one year. For the next 12 months, in 2011, she served as the Chief of Staff to the President of the World Bank Group, at that time James Wolfensohn. Then, for the last six years of her tenure at the World Bank, she was put in charge of the World Bank Institute, from 2001 until 2007.[3] After she left the World Bank, she co-founded The Fezembat Group, a consultancy partnership based in Castelnau de Montmiral, France, where she worked as the Managing Partner from 2007 until 2009.[3][4] For the next four and half years, from July 2009 until November 2013, she relocated to Harare, Zimbabwe and worked as the Executive Secretary of the African Capacity Building Foundation, a non-profit organisation. During the same time-frame, she concurrently served as a Distinguished Professor at Sciences Po Paris, starting in 2007 until December 2013.[3] In December 2013, she returned to her native Tanzania and served as the Co-Founder, Partner and Chairwoman of Mkoba Private Equity Fund, that was positioned to invest in emerging opportunities on the African continent, working there for two and one half years until June 2016.[3] Other responsibilitiesDr. Frannie Léautier has served in the past and/or is serving today as a board member on a number of regional and international organisations, inducing (a) Uongozi Institute (Leadership Institute) in Tanzania (b) African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), based in Nairobi, Kenya (c) Women's World Banking, based in New York City and (d) African Development Bank Group, based in Abidjan, the Ivory Coast.[3] PersonalShe is fluent in Swahili, French and English, with working competency in Spanish and Arabic.[3] See also
