The song features a guest appearance from American rapper Ty Dolla Sign, and is the sequel to West's song "Ghost Town", from his album Ye (2018).[3][4] It samples "Stark" by Corin "Mr. Chop" Littler and a speech by Marcus Garvey, as well as interpolating lyrics from the original "Ghost Town". Music critics praised the song. It was one of Jay-Z's 21 favourite tracks of 2018. The song was submitted for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, yet failed to enter. Release"Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2)" was released on June 8, 2018 as the fourth track on Kids See Ghosts.[2] On the day of its release, multiple tracks were mislabeled on streaming services, except for "Freeee", which was the only track not to be mislabeled.[5][6] ReceptionThe song has received general acclaim from music critics. Jack Hamilton of Slate called the song "[Kids See Ghosts]' most fun and exuberant track", and comparing its sound to English musician David Bowie, with its "booming walls of vocals, gnashing distortion, and thundering drums."[7] Spencer Kornhaber of The Atlantic further praised the song, calling it and its predecessor "Ghost Town" as the standout tracks of their respective albums.[8] Jay-Z listed the song among his 21 favourite tracks of 2018 on his year-end Tidal playlist.[9]SamplesThe song is built around a sample of the song "Stark", written and performed by Corin "Mr. Chop" Littler.[3][4] An interpolation is included of lyrics from West's song "Ghost Town".[4] The song also contains an excerpt from a speech by black nationalist Marcus Garvey. It reads:[3][4] {{quote|"May I say something to you to give you a true knowledge of yourself and lifeMan in the full knowledge of himself is a superb and supreme creature of creation When man becomes possessor of the knowledge of himself, he becomes the master of his environment."}} Awards and nominations{{see also|List of awards and nominations received by Kanye West}}{{see also|List of awards and nominations received by Kid Cudi}}West reportedly submitted "Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2)" for the 2019 Grammys in an attempt to win awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance, but it was ultimately nominated for neither.[10][11] PersonnelCredits adapted from Tidal.[2]
