The Games were organized by the Bolivarian Sports Organization (ODEBO). The Games were officially opened by Germán Suárez Flamerich, who became president of the "Junta de Gobierno" 1950-1952, after the assassination of Carlos Delgado Chalbaud. A detailed history of the early editions of the Bolivarian Games between 1938 and 1989 was published in a book written (in Spanish) by José Gamarra Zorrilla, former president of the Bolivian Olympic Committee, and first president (1976-1982) of ODESUR.[1] Gold medal winners from Ecuador were published by the Comité Olímpico Ecuatoriano.[2] ParticipationA total of 1010 athletes from 6 countries were reported to participate:[1] {{col-begin}}{{col-break}}
SportsThe local Organizing Committee included three popular Venezuelan sports (Basque pelota, Bolas criollas, and Coleo) as exhibition events. The following sports were explicitly mentioned:[1][2][3][4][5] {{col-begin|width=100%}}{{col-1-of-3}}
