}}{{short description|Israeli mechanical engineer}}Gabi Ben-Dor (Hebrew: גבי בן-דור , born June 10, 1950) is the first incumbent of the Mower Professorial Chair of Shock Wave Studies at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and the head of the Protective Technologies R&D Center, which he established, since 1997.[1]

Early life and education

Gabi Ben-Dor was born in 1950 in Beer Sheva, Israel, to Shoshana and Paul Sandor who survived the Holocaust and emigrated from Hungary to Beer Sheva, Israel, in March 1949. He was raised in Beer Sheva.

In 1964 he graduated from Masada Primary School, in 1968 he graduated from Mekif Alef high school, and joined the army for a compulsory 3-year service (1968-1971). His entire service was in the Artillery. In April 1970 he became an officer. As an officer he participated in the War of Attrition and was injured during this war. He resigned from the army as a Captain in 1971. Soon after, he started his academic career.

Ben-Dor completed his B.Sc. in 1975 and his M.Sc. in 1976 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Professor Ben-Dor received his Ph.D. from the Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) of the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada and was awarded the G.N. Paterson Award for his graduate studies in 1978. His Ph.D. supervisor was Professor Irvine Israel Glass. A year later (1979) he completed his Post-Doctoral research also at UTIAS.[2]

Career

After completing his Post-Doctoral research he returned to the Ben-Gurion University where he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering and established his own research group in shock wave related phenomena and developed the Shock Tube Laboratory, which in 1997 became one of the laboratories of the Protective Technologies R&D Center that was also established by him. He has been with the Department of Mechanical Engineering until 2018 when he retired as a Professor Emeritus.

During 1987-1991 Ben-Dor served as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering; he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences during 1994-2000 and 2008-2011; during 2000-2006 he served as the Director of the Institutes for Applied Research of the Ben-Gurion University. In addition, since 1997 Ben-Dor served as the Head of the Protective Technologies R&D Center until his retirement in 2018.
