Gagik Yeganyan ({{lang-hy|Գագիկ Կիմի Եգանյան}}) is an Armenian politician.

Biography

Gagik Yeganyan (born June 2, 1956, Hadrut, Nagorno Karabakh, USSR) is an Armenian politician, former Head of the RA Migration Service (1999-2018). On father’s side Yeganyan comes from Artsakh’s Melik-Yeganyan family, while maternal relatives are the Mikoyans among whom are Anastas Mikoyan, a famous Soviet statesman, and Artem Mikoyan, a Soviet Armenian aircraft designer who designed the famous MiG military aircraft.

In 2015, when in office as Head of the State Migration Service, Gagik Yeganyan led the negotiations with the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation, which resulted in lifting the entry ban for 28,000 Armenian citizens.

In 2003-2010 he was elected and served as member of the Council of Europe Committee for Migration (CDMG), and from 2008 to 2009, as Vice President of the Bureau of the same committee.

In December, 2018, he was elected as a member of the Public Council of Armenia, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Demography and Gender.

Gagik Yeganyan initiated and established a special shelter for asylum seekers in 2002.

Education

1977 - 1980 – Post graduate student of Yerevan Institute of National Economy, PhD in Economics (1981). Yeganyan defended the work at the age of 24 at the doctoral thesis committee headed by renowned scientist, academician Abel Aghanbekyan.

1972 - 1977 - Yerevan State University, Faculty of Economics, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Econometrics.

1969 - 1972 - Physics-Mathematics School, Yerevan State University.

1992 - 2002 - Participated four times in different courses of the Joint Institute of Vienna (JVI), a cooperative venture of six international organizations and the Austrian Authorities, where participants were competitively selected.

Career

1999 - 2018 June - Head of the State Migration Service of the Republic of Armenia

Gagik Yeganyan coordinated the development and implementation of four strategies for Armenia’s Migration Policy (in 2000, 2004, 2011 and 2017) and two action plans for the last two strategies.

The National Migration Policy 2011-2016 had 14 directions with 144 specific actions, deadlines and responsible bodies and was successfully implemented and recognized as one of the best in Post-Soviet region by GIZ.

He also headed the development and implementation of policy on integration of immigrants and refugees in 2016-2018.

Gagik Yeganyan initiated the development of a number of web-based information resources designed to help different categories of migrants, including backtoarmenia.am, www.tundarc.am, www.sendmoneyarmenia.am, www.miglib.org, http://karabagh.am/.

Other Activities

Gagik Yeganyan actively participated in the resettlement of Artsakh, establishment of new villages and attracted donors for this purpose. In 1991 he travelled to Getashen that was completely blockaded, and solved the issue of pension payments – over a year Azerbaijan did not make pension payments to over 1000 villagers.

In 2001 Yeganyan together with Sergo Yeritsyan teamed up with the Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church to organize the baptism ceremony for more than 600 children from nearby communities in Dadivank, Artsakh.

Influencers

Kim Yeganyan, Gagik Yeganyan’s father, a well-known Soviet statesman, influenced Gagik Yeganyan's career choice. Kim Yeganyan was the first secretary of the regional councils of Krasnoselsk and Vardenis for 11 years, and then served as Deputy Chairman of the Armenian State Agrarian Industrial Committee.

Personal life

Gagik Yeganyan is an active mountaineer. He twice conquered Mount Ararat. In a 2018 interview he said: "I encourage everyone to go hiking. It is a lifestyle, it is an inseparable part of my life. At least once a week, I climb mountains, get energy there and return".

He is also known as a classical music connoisseur.

He is married and has two sons. His elder son, Hayk Yeganyan, is the Chief Executive Officer of Armenia Securities Exchange.
