The season was Bob Woodruff's sixth as the head coach of the Florida Gators football team. The Gators played their only eight-game Southeastern Conference schedule before the 1990s, and probably the most difficult of the 1950s. The standout Gator players included offensive and defensive tackle John Barrow, halfback and punter Don Chandler, two-way halfback Jackie Simpson and defensive back John Symank. The highlights of the 1955 season included three conference victories over the Mississippi State Maroons (20–14), LSU Tigers (18–14) and Georgia Bulldogs (19–13). The Gators closed out the season with a knife's edge 7–6 road loss to the Miami Hurricanes in their home stadium in Miami, Florida. Woodruff's 1955 Florida Gators finished 4–6 overall and 3–5 in the SEC, placing tenth of twelve teams in the conference.[2] Schedule{{CFB schedule| rankyear = 1955 | poll = AP |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 17 | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = Mississippi State | site_stadium = Florida Field | site_cityst = Gainesville, Florida | score = 20–14 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 24 | w/l = l | rank = 19 | opponent = Georgia Tech | opprank = 2 | site_stadium = Florida Field | site_cityst = Gainesville, Florida | score = 7–14 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 1 | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Auburn | site_stadium = Cliff Hare Stadium | site_cityst = Auburn, Alabama | score = 0–13 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 8 | w/l = w | nonconf = y | rank = | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1955|team=George Washington Colonials|title=George Washington}} | site_stadium = Gator Bowl Stadium | site_cityst = Jacksonville, Florida | score = 28–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 15 | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = LSU | site_stadium = Florida Field | site_cityst = Gainesville, Florida | score = 18–14 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 22 | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Kentucky | site_stadium = McLean Stadium | site_cityst = Lexington, Kentucky | score = 7–10 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 5 | w/l = w | rank = | opponent = Georgia | site_stadium = Gator Bowl Stadium | site_cityst = Jacksonville, Florida | score = 19–13 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 12 | w/l = l | homecoming = y | rank = | opponent = Tennessee | site_stadium = Florida Field | site_cityst = Gainesville, Florida | score = 0–20 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 19 | w/l = l | rank = | opponent = Vanderbilt | site_stadium = Dudley Field | site_cityst = Nashville, Tennessee | score = 6–21 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 26 | w/l = l | nonconf = y | rank = | opponent = Miami (FL) | opprank = 14 | site_stadium = Burdine Stadium | site_cityst = Miami, Florida | score = 6–7 }} }} Primary source: 2015 Florida Gators Football Media Guide.[2] References1. ^{{cite web|last1=The Department of Publicity and The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics|title=1955 Florida Football Facts 'n Figures|url=https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/gatorzone.com/documents/2016/8/19/1955_fb_media_guide.pdf|website=floridagators.com|publisher=University Athletic Association, Inc.|accessdate=15 March 2018}} {{Florida Gators football navbox}}2. ^1 2015 Florida Gators Football Media Guide {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208143532/http://web.gatorzone.com/football/media/2015/media_guide.pdf |date=2015-12-08 }}, University Athletic Association, Gainesville, Florida, p. 107 (2015).
