Football League{{main|1963–64 Football League}}First DivisionLiverpool clinched the First Division title just two seasons after winning promotion, finishing four points ahead of runners-up Manchester United while defending champions Everton finished third. Tottenham Hotspur managed to finish fourth despite not winning any silverware and being without many key players for much of the season due to injury, while captain Danny Blanchflower announced his retirement from playing just before the season's end. Tragedy then struck the club after the season was over, when forward John White was struck by lightning and killed on a North London golf course. Chelsea enjoyed a strong return to the First Division by finishing fifth, while Leicester City finally got their hands on a major trophy by winning the League Cup. With Alf Ramsey having now left Ipswich Town to manage the England team, Ipswich Town struggled badly under his successor Jackie Milburn, and went down in bottom place having conceded 121 goals just two seasons after being league champions. Bolton Wanderers, who had gradually faded away since the retirement of centre-forward Nat Lofthouse in 1960, also went down. {{#invoke:sports table|main|style=WDL|res_col_header=QR |use_goal_ratio=y |winpoints=2 |team1=LIV|name_LIV=Liverpool |team2=MUN|name_MUN=Manchester United |team3=EVE|name_EVE=Everton |team4=TOT|name_TOT=Tottenham Hotspur |team5=CHE|name_CHE=Chelsea |team6=SHW|name_SHW=Sheffield Wednesday |team7=BLB|name_BLB=Blackburn Rovers |team8=ARS|name_ARS=Arsenal |team9=BUR|name_BUR=Burnley |team10=WBA|name_WBA=West Bromwich Albion |team11=LEI|name_LEI=Leicester City |team12=SHU|name_SHU=Sheffield United |team13=NOT|name_NOT=Nottingham Forest |team14=WHU|name_WHU=West Ham United |team15=FUL|name_FUL=Fulham |team16=WOL|name_WOL=Wolverhampton Wanderers |team17=STK|name_STK=Stoke City |team18=BLP|name_BLP=Blackpool |team19=AST|name_AST=Aston Villa |team20=BIR|name_BIR=Birmingham City |team21=BOL|name_BOL=Bolton Wanderers |team22=IPS|name_IPS=Ipswich Town |win_LIV=26|draw_LIV=5|loss_LIV=11|gf_LIV=92|ga_LIV=45 |win_MUN=23|draw_MUN=7|loss_MUN=12|gf_MUN=90|ga_MUN=62 |win_EVE=21|draw_EVE=10|loss_EVE=11|gf_EVE=84|ga_EVE=64 |win_TOT=22|draw_TOT=7|loss_TOT=13|gf_TOT=97|ga_TOT=81 |win_CHE=20|draw_CHE=10|loss_CHE=12|gf_CHE=72|ga_CHE=56 |win_SHW=19|draw_SHW=11|loss_SHW=12|gf_SHW=84|ga_SHW=67 |win_BLB=18|draw_BLB=10|loss_BLB=14|gf_BLB=89|ga_BLB=65 |win_ARS=17|draw_ARS=11|loss_ARS=14|gf_ARS=90|ga_ARS=82 |win_BUR=17|draw_BUR=10|loss_BUR=15|gf_BUR=71|ga_BUR=64 |win_WBA=16|draw_WBA=11|loss_WBA=15|gf_WBA=70|ga_WBA=61 |win_LEI=16|draw_LEI=11|loss_LEI=15|gf_LEI=61|ga_LEI=58 |win_SHU=16|draw_SHU=11|loss_SHU=15|gf_SHU=61|ga_SHU=64 |win_NOT=16|draw_NOT=9|loss_NOT=17|gf_NOT=64|ga_NOT=68 |win_WHU=14|draw_WHU=12|loss_WHU=16|gf_WHU=69|ga_WHU=74 |win_FUL=13|draw_FUL=13|loss_FUL=16|gf_FUL=58|ga_FUL=65 |win_WOL=12|draw_WOL=15|loss_WOL=15|gf_WOL=70|ga_WOL=80 |win_STK=14|draw_STK=10|loss_STK=18|gf_STK=77|ga_STK=78 |win_BLP=13|draw_BLP=9|loss_BLP=20|gf_BLP=52|ga_BLP=73 |win_AST=11|draw_AST=12|loss_AST=19|gf_AST=62|ga_AST=71 |win_BIR=11|draw_BIR=7|loss_BIR=24|gf_BIR=54|ga_BIR=92 |win_BOL=10|draw_BOL=8|loss_BOL=24|gf_BOL=48|ga_BOL=80 |win_IPS=9|draw_IPS=7|loss_IPS=26|gf_IPS=56|ga_IPS=121 |col_EC=#CCFFCC|text_EC=Qualified for the European Cup |result1=EC |col_ICFC=#E4FBDA|text_ICFC=Qualified for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup |result2=ICFC|result3=ICFC |col_R=#FFCCCC|text_R=Relegated to the Second Division |result21=R|result22=R |update=complete |class_rules=1) points; 2) goal difference; 3) number of goals scored. |source=rsssf.com }} Second DivisionLeeds United returned to the First Division after seven years away by clinching the Second Division title under ambitious manager Don Revie, while Sunderland's six-year exile from the First Division was ended by promotion as Second Division runners-up.
