It has a single thin leaf fused to the flowering stem and up to thirty small, coal black flowers. It grows in heath in coastal and near-coastal parts of the Northern Rivers area. DescriptionGenoplesium anthracinum is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous, herb with an underground tuber and a single thin leaf {{convert|100-200|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and fused to the flowering stem with the free part {{convert|15-28|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. Between eight and thirty coal black flowers are arranged along a flowering stem {{convert|15-40|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall and taller than the leaf. The flowers are about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and are inverted so that the labellum is above the column rather than below it. The dorsal sepal is about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|3.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with hairless edges. The lateral sepals are about {{convert|6|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, have a prominent gland on the pointed tip and spread widely apart from each other. The petals are about {{convert|2.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide with hairless edges and spread widely apart from each other. The labellum is about {{convert|2.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, with an irregular margin and a sharply pointed tip. There is a callus in the centre of the labellum and extending nearly to its tip. Flowering occurs in April and May.[2][3]Taxonomy and namingThe black midge orchid was first formally described in 2006 by David Jones who gave it the name Corunastylis anthracina and published the description in Australian Orchid Research.[4] In 2014, Julian Shaw changed the name to Genoplesium anthracinum.[5] The specific epithet (anthracinum) is an Ancient Greek word meaning "pertaining to coal".[6] Distribution and habitatGenoplesium anthracinum grows in heath, often colonising disturbed sites and is found between Byron Bay and Wardell.[2][3]References1. ^{{WCSP | 890636 | Genoplesium anthracinum}} 2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =184}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=Genoplesium anthracinum|url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Genoplesium~anthracinum+ined.|publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney|accessdate=28 January 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Corunastylis anthracina|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/616346|publisher=APNI|accessdate=28 January 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Genoplesium anthracinum|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/6470266|publisher=APNI|accessdate=28 January 2018}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page = 215}} External links
