He is the nameake of the Zottman Curl. LifeZottman was born circa 1867.[1] He worked as a milkman until the turn of the century, when he became a professional strongman.[1] Zottman began his career as a performer at the dime museum. By the late 1890s, he was performing at the Girard Avenue Theatre.[1][2] He was described as a "local Hercules" by The Times in 1896,[3] and by The Philadelphia Inquirer as "a giant who is known as the "strong man"--a Sandow, who rides a wheel geared up to 200 or more" in 1899.[4] Zottman eventually became the manager of the Girard Avenue Theatre, until he retired in 1932.[5][6] Zottman acquired five properties in Philadelphia.[5][6] He maintained a residence at 1215 North Seventh Street in Philadelphia, and a summer home in Wildwood, New Jersey.[5][6] By the time of his death, he was worth an estimated $20,000.[5][6] Zottman's wife Cecelia predeceased him, and he died on July 27, 1942 in Philadelphia.[5][2] His estate was split between his friends, a Catholic church and an orphanage.[6] The Zottman Curl was named for him.[7] References1. ^1 2 {{cite news |title=George Zottman |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/171479634/?terms=%22george%2Bzottman%22 |accessdate=January 2, 2019 |work=The Philadelphia Inquirer |date=July 28, 1942|page=16|via=Newspapers.com|registration=yes}} {{commons category|George Zottman}}2. ^1 {{cite news |title=George Zottman |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/448354991/?terms=%22george%2Bzottman%22 |accessdate=January 3, 2019 |work=The Courier-Post |location=Camden, New Jersey |date=July 29, 1942}} 3. ^{{cite news |title=The Girard |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/53788692/?terms=%22george%2Bzottman%22 |accessdate=January 3, 2019 |work=The Times |date=March 29, 1896|page=14|via=Newspapers.com|registration=yes}} 4. ^{{cite news |last1=Morris |first1=Felix |title=At The Play. |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/168364635/?terms=%22george%2Bzottman%22 |accessdate=January 3, 2019 |work=The Philadelphia Inquirer |date=May 21, 1899|page=28|via=Newspapers.com|registration=yes}} 5. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news |title=42 of Kin, Friends To Share Estate |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/480814052/?terms=%22george%2Bzottman%22 |accessdate=January 3, 2019 |work=The Evening Courier |location=Camden, New Jersey |date=September 1, 1942|page=13|via=Newspapers.com|registration=yes}} 6. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news |title=42 Persons to Share Estate of Showman; Charities Also Benefit |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/171444688/?terms=%22george%2Bzottman%22 |accessdate=January 3, 2019 |work=The Philadelphia Inquirer |date=September 1, 1942|page=13|via=Newspapers.com|registration=yes}} 7. ^{{cite book |last1=Grymkowski; |first1=Peter |last2=Connors |first2=Edward |last3=Kimber |first3=Tim |last4=Reynolds |first4=Bill |title=The Gold's Gym Training Encyclopedia |date=1984 |publisher=Contemporary Books |location=Chicago |isbn=9780809254460 |page=224}} External links
