She was also the first female chair of an Irish banking institution, the Irish Life & Permanent. She was one of Ireland's best known business women. Personal lifeBowler was born in London. Her mother was Irish and her father was British. She was raised on the Isle of Wight. She ran away from home as a child but was quickly discovered by a train conductor. However, when she was 13 she became seriously ill with a near fatal kidney issue. Her formal education almost ended at that point. She dropped out of school at 14 and later went to a secretarial college. She worked for the town clerk as a personal assistant but found it boring. That started her entrepreneurial spirit. The result of the illness meant that Bowler suffered kidney problems for the rest of her life.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] CareerBowler moved to Dublin when she was 19 where she met the man who would become her husband, Harry Sydner. In 1975, with him, she founded the package holiday company Budget Travel. They sold the company in the 1990s. Bowler became a member of the board of Irish Life in 1998. She went on to be chair of the institution until 2010. She was also the founding chair of Fáilte Ireland from 2003 to 2008.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Bowler had a step daughter with her husband and through her a granddaughter. Bowler died on 14 December 2016.
