| name = Gitanjali Rao | birth_date = {{birth year and age |2005}} | residence = Lone Tree, Colorado | education = STEM School Highlands Ranch }} Gitanjali Rao (born 2005) is a young inventor from Colorado. She won the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge in 2017. Early lifeRao is from Lone Tree, Colorado. Her parents regularly take her to museums.[1] They encourage her curiosity and support her experiments. She attends the STEM School Highlands Ranch.[2] She wants to study genetics and epidemiology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[3][4][5] She has spoken up about the gender pay gap.[6] Young Scientist ChallengeRao heard about the Flint water crisis whilst watching the news.[7][8][9] She became interested in ways to measure the lead content in water. She developed a device based on carbon nanotubes that could send information via bluetooth.[10] Rao collaborated with Kathleen Shafer, a research scientist at 3M.[11] In 2017 Rao won the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and was awarded $25,000 for her invention, Tethys.[3][12][13] Tethys contains a 9-volt battery, a lead sensing unit, a bluetooth extension and a processor.[3] It uses carbon nanotubes, whose resistance changes in the presence of lead.[2][14] She learnt about the carbon nanotubes whilst reading the Massachusetts Institute of Technology website.[15] She plans to work with scientists and medical professionals to investigate the potential of Tethys into a viable method.[16] She was selected by Gizmodo as one of the most heroic earthlings. She presented her idea at the 2018 MAKERS conference and raised a further $25,000.[17] She gave a TEDx Talk in Nashville 2018.[18] In September 2018 Rao was awarded the United States Environmental Protection Agency President’s Environmental Youth Award.[19] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.wsls.com/education/stemming-the-leak-4-ways-to-encourage-stem-in-your-middle-schooler|title=Stemming the leak: 4 ways to encourage STEM in your middle...|website=www.wsls.com|language=en-US|access-date=2018-10-23}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Rao, Gitanjali}}2. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://edition.cnn.com/2017/11/28/health/gitanjali-rao-young-scientist-winner/index.html|title=The 12-year old who won a $25,000 science prize|last=CNN|first=Jacopo Prisco,|work=CNN|access-date=2018-10-23}} 3. ^1 2 {{Cite news|url=https://www.denverpost.com/2017/11/22/americas-top-young-scientist-lone-tree-gitanjali-rao-lead-flint-michigan/|title=Lone Tree girl named America’s Top Young Scientist after inventing lead-detecting sensor to help residents of Flint, Mich.|date=2017-11-23|work=The Denver Post|access-date=2018-10-23|language=en-US}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://uk.news.yahoo.com/teachers-can-learn-americas-top-young-scientist-12-year-old-gitanjali-rao-224050370.html|title=What teachers can learn from America's top young scientist, 12-year-old Gitanjali Rao|access-date=2018-10-23|language=en-GB}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.americanbazaaronline.com/2017/10/19/indian-american-girl-gitanjali-rao-is-the-winner-of-2017-discovery-education-3m-young-scientist-challenge-429746/|title=Indian American Gitanjali Rao is the winner of 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge|date=2017-10-19|work=The American Bazaar|access-date=2018-10-23|language=en-US}} 6. ^{{Citation|last=The Female Quotient|title=Young Scientist Gitanjali Rao On Closing the Wage Gap|date=2018-04-10|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42GXXLPDvcM|access-date=2018-10-23}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.rookiemag.com/2018/01/finding-solutions-real-problems-interview-gitanjali-rao/|title=Finding Solutions to Real Problems: An Interview With Gitanjali Rao -
