"Give & Take" is the third episode of Red Dwarf XI and the 64th in the series run. Originally broadcast on the British television channel Dave on 6 October 2016, it was made available early on 30 September 2016 on UKTV Play.

Synopsis

Detecting "strange energy signatures" on B Deck, Rimmer attempts to catch a lift only to be put on hold by the lift's artificial intelligence who Rimmer threatens with demotion for making him wait before abandoning his investigation.

Shortly afterwards, Rimmer wakes up Lister, who appears to be recovering from a hangover, with news of a nearby derelict space station rich in resources due for a collision with an asteroid storm in five hours. They, along with Cat and Kryten, head off onboard Starbug to scavenge the ship for parts.

When they arrive, the crew split in pairs of two to hurry their search ahead of the asteroid storm, Kryten heads with Rimmer while Lister and Cat go forth together. Rimmer and Kryten discover the derelict ship is home to a state-of-the-art robot surgeon from the 23rd century, Asclepius. As they venture through his medical suite, they encounter a robot who they presume to be Asclepius and the robot tags along, unbeknownst to them the robot is Snacky, an automated snack dispenser.

Meanwhile, Lister and Cat encounter the decomposed corpse of a Romero G. Gonzalez, a stasis booth engineer who appears to have killed himself with a knife through the back. Just as they prepare to leave, they are ambushed by the real Asclepius, who appears to have gone insane and knocks them out with tranquiliser darts. Rimmer, Kryten, and Snacky roam the space station looking for Lister and Cat as the asteroid storm is due sooner than anticipated. Rimmer and Kryten discover Lister and Cat unconscious on stretchers being prepped for surgery by Asclepius, who Rimmer engages in a brief firefight with, resulting in Asclepius being temporarily stunned. Rimmer and Kryten quickly push Lister and Cat back to Starbug alongside Snacky as the asteroid storm arrives; in the nick of time all five escape as the derelict is destroyed by the asteroids, disposing of Asclepius.

Back on Red Dwarf, Lister reawakens on a stretcher in the science room where Rimmer and Kryten inform him he has no kidneys due to Asclepius removing them and Rimmer accidentally destroying them in the crossfire of their subsequent firefight. Being sustained only due to a MTK chip - a liver dialysis device with the lifespan of a few days - Lister is forced to ask Cat for a kidney donation in a surgery to be conducted by Snacky, who they still believe to be Asclepius, who could rewrite the Cat's DNA and make his kidneys compatible with Lister's. However, Cat refuses to undergo the surgery when asked by Lister.

With the ability to lie as taught by Lister in prior episodes, Kryten falsely informs Cat it is he who needs a new kidney, not Lister. Lister and Kryten manage to get Cat to sign his approval of the kidney donation to Lister, under the assumption its the other way around, when Cat is told what is going on Kryten gives him a sedative to knock him unconscious. As they prepare for the kidney transplant operation to be done by Snacky, who they still believe to be Asclepius, Snacky reveals he is really an automated snack dispenser and incapable of doing anything but provide snacks.

Lister attempts to form a new plan, to clone himself just as he believes Romero G. Gonzalez did which resulted in his clone killing him. However, Snacky reveals Gonzalez didn't clone himself, and learnt of his plan to hack stasis booths and make them capable of transporting people through time from Gonzalez's conversations with colleagues when he went to order snacks. Gonzalez encountered his future self, who warned him to never travel back to the past or else he'd be murdered, the present-day Gonzalez refused to believe him and subsequently murdered him. This gave Gonzalez anxiety and so he hacked a stasis booth, traveled back to the past to warn his past self, and was swiftly murdered.

The crew encourage Snacky to try and hack a stasis booth to allow them to steal a kidney from Lister's past self, using knowledge overheard from Gonzalez when he was ordering snacks. Snacky eventually gains the courage and successfully hacks a stasis booth allowing the crew to travel back in time. The crew quickly sedate past Lister and successfully perform the surgery. They travel back to the past to place the past Lister back to the sleeping quarters, however quickly take a nearby lift to avoid detection from their past selves. The lift's AI informs Rimmer his past self is calling for the lift, a call-back to the opening segment of the episode, to which Rimmer commands him to ignore his past self and even promises to promote the lift AI to the officer's quarters to make-up for the demotion threats.

The crew are able to successfully place Lister back in the sleeping quarters, disguising the room to appear that Lister is recovering from a hangover, and travel back to the present with their Lister.

Three weeks later, Rimmer is taking the same lift from the beginning of the episode, now demoted despite Rimmer's promise to promote him. Rimmer shrugs it off when the lift AI brings it up, only to be terrified to be informed by the lift AI that Snacky has upgraded the lifts to travel close to the speed of light, which the lift AI tries out on Rimmer, much to his displeasure.
