It is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region, and was formerly part of the Lakes State. Gok State borders Tonj to the west and Western Lakes to the east.[3] The state had a population of 117,755 in 2008 and an estimated population of 174,460 in 2014.[4] HistoryBefore the creation of Gok State, the state was formerly part of Lakes State. On 2 October 2015, President Salva Kiir issued a decree establishing 28 states in place of the 10 constitutionally established states.[5] The decree established the new states largely along ethnic lines. A number of opposition parties and civil society groups challenged the constitutionality of the decree. Kiir later resolved to take it to parliament for approval as a constitutional amendment.[6] In November the South Sudanese parliament empowered President Kiir to create new states.[7] Madang Majok was appointed Governor on 24 December.[8]GeographyGok State is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region, and is one of the smallest states. Gok State borders Tonj State to the west and Western Lakes State to the east.[3] Administrative divisionsGok State is currently consisted of six counties. These counties are Cueibet (county seat: Bueibet), Abiriu (county seat: Abiriu), Duony (county seat: Duong), Waat (county seat: Pagor), Anyar Nguan (county seat: Tiaptiap), and Malou-Pech (county seat: Malou). Gok originally consisted only of a single county (Cueibet County).[1] But as of 6 October 2016, five more new counties were established, to bring a total number of six.[2] Towns and citiesThe capital of the state is the town of Cueibet. The town is located in Cueibet County, and is also the capital of the state.[1][2] References{{portal|South Sudan}}1. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/governor-gok-state-appoints-state-secretary-general|title=Governor of Gok state appoints state secretary-general|publisher=Radio Tamazuj|date=24 February 2016|accessdate=14 August 2016}} {{States of South Sudan}}{{coord missing|South Sudan}}2. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.gurtong.net/ECM/Editorial/tabid/124/ctl/ArticleView/mid/519/articleId/19908/Six-Counties-Established-In-Gok-State.aspx|title=Six Counties Established In Gok State|publisher=Radio Gurtong|date=6 October 2016|accessdate=31 October 2016}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|title=Gok State|url=http://www.south-sudan.biz/de/glossary/gok/|publisher=south-sudan.biz|accessdate=27 November 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Cueibet (County, South Sudan)|url=https://www.citypopulation.de/php/southsudan-admin.php?adm2id=8401|publisher=citypopulation.de|accessdate=27 November 2016}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/kiir-and-makuei-want-28-states-s-sudan|title=Kiir and Makuei want 28 states in South Sudan|publisher=Radio Tamazuj|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151208183221/https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/kiir-and-makuei-want-28-states-s-sudan|archivedate=2015-12-08|df=}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/kiir-pressured-taking-decree-parliament-approval|title=Kiir pressured into taking decree to parliament for approval|publisher=Radio Tamazuj|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304224908/https://radiotamazuj.org/en/article/kiir-pressured-taking-decree-parliament-approval|archivedate=2016-03-04|df=}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.sudantribune.com/spip.php?article57484|title=South Sudan's Kiir appoints governors of 28 new states|publisher=Sudan Tribune}} 8. ^{{cite news|date=24 December 2015 |title=South Sudan’s President appoints 28 Governors, defies peace agreement |publisher=South Sudan News Agency |url=http://www.southsudannewsagency.com/news/breaking-news/south-sudans-president-appoints-28-governors-defies-peace-agreement |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160202025755/http://www.southsudannewsagency.com/news/breaking-news/south-sudans-president-appoints-28-governors-defies-peace-agreement |archivedate=2016-02-02 |df= }} 2 : Bahr el Ghazal|States of South Sudan |
