He was educated at Crewe County Secondary School,[2] the University of Manchester, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, Wesley House and St Catherine's College, Oxford. Wakfield was a Methodist circuit minister in Edgware, Woodstock, Stockport, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
