HistoryThe area was populated by a cotton mill in the 19th century, which had easy access to the Mersey and the London North Western Railway.{{sfn|TPS|2014|pp=11,22}} A sand pit was dug in 1899, and used in the early 20th century before being filled in 1923.{{sfn|TPS|2014|p=22}} A housing estate was built in the mid to late 1930s, including a number of terraced houses and a recreation ground.{{sfn|TPS|2014|p=12}} By the 1970s, the estate had become one of the worst in Greater Manchester, with a fearsome reputation for vandalism, burglary and arson.[2] A 1978 report in the Stockport Advertiser suggested that the estate should be razed to the ground and turned into industrial units.[2] By the 1990s, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council had decided to demolish the estate for redevelopment after 200 homes on the estate had become vacant and half the council-housed residents were on a transfer list. In 1999, the last remaining residents moved out and all buildings were demolished.[2] The land sat unused for some years afterwards, and continued to attract antisocial behaviour from youths and fly tipping.[2] RedevelopmentIn 2007, the site was cleared to create a new business park.[3] In 2015, Stockport MBC planned to invest £10m to regenerate the area with a {{convert|145000|sqft|sqm}} light-industrial park, creating a potential 240 new jobs.[4][5] ReferencesCitations1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Gorsey+Bank+Rd,+Stockport+SK3+0JF/@53.4044802,-2.1925447,1808m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x487bb30e7b528d37:0x926734df61e0919e!8m2!3d53.4051366!4d-2.1870209|title=Gorsey Bank Rd, Stockport|publisher=Google Maps|accessdate=20 July 2016}} Sources{{refbegin}}2. ^1 {{cite news|url=http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/residents-of-lost-estate-get-wish---939854|title=Residents of lost estate get wish – 30 years on|newspaper=Manchester Evening News|date=16 April 2010|accessdate=20 July 2016}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite news|url=http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/its-the-end-of-an-era-for-boroughs-worst-1028217|title=It’s the end of an era for borough’s worst housing estate|newspaper=Manchester Evening News|date=5 September 2007|accessdate=20 July 2016}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/in-your-area/stockport-council-gives-itself-planning-8501472|title=Stockport town centre cinema and leisure scheme granted planning permission|newspaper=Manchester Evening News|date=23 January 2015|accessdate=20 July 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.stockport.gov.uk/services/communitypeopleliving/newapproach/investingingrowth/aurorastockport_overview/ |title=Aurora Stockport Overview |publisher=Stockport MBC |accessdate=20 July 2016 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160821085455/http://www.stockport.gov.uk/services/communitypeopleliving/newapproach/investingingrowth/aurorastockport_overview/ |archivedate=21 August 2016 |df= }}
