The GPS Week Number Rollover 2019 occured on the night of April 6 to April 7 2019.^[1] The United States Department of Homeland Security, Cyber Security Center and the International Civil Aviation Organization have issued a warning on this issue.^[2]^[3]

At midnight (UTC), the GPS Week value changes from 2047 to 2048, and the Global Positioning System (GPS) system weekly counter overflows because it is stored in only ten bits, so the range is 0– 1023, the internal value thus changes to zero again.^[2] This phenomenon happens every 1024 weeks (every 19.7 years). The previous rollover took place in 1999 when GPS Week 1024.^[2] GPS is not only used for positioning, but also for accurate time. Time is used to accurately synchronize payment operations, broadcasters, and mobile operators.^[2] Some older devices that use GPS could stop working or move back in time by 20 or 40 years.^[2]
