Prominent Sunni Muslims organisations in the country elected Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar as the Grand Mufti of India in a programme conducted by all India Tanzeem ulama e Islam, an intellectual scholastic body of Muslims in India^[1][2][3].Akhtar Raza Khan was the Grand Mufti of India.^[4][5] He died following a long illness on 20 July 2018.^[6][7] Unlike Grand Muftis in some sunni majority countries, the Grand Mufti of India is not state-appointed and has no official role in the republic of India. Instead, Grand Mufti of India is elected by prominent muslim organizations in India.

History

First Grand Mufti of India has been appointed by the final Mughal Emperor, His Highness Bahadur Shah Zafar. He appointed a famous Hanafi Scholar Moulana Hazrat Syed Fazle Rasool Badayuni as the first Grand Mufti of India.^[8] He was having a very good knowledge in Fiqh and the consolidation of his statements on Islamic subjects published as a book in Urdu named “Tariqi Fatwa” which later on became very famous in the world. After that his Grandson Moulana Hazrat `Abd al-Qadir Bada'uni has appointed as the Grand Mufti of India.

In the British ruling period, Islamic scholars thought to appoint Imam Hazrat Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi who was the spiritual leader of North Indian Hanafi Muslims, great scholar and a revivalist. Thousands of students and scholars whoever was attracted towards his works on spiritual-religious-educational fields, requested him to take the charge of Grand Mufti but, he refused to be appointed as the Grand Mufti. He was interested to be engaged with Educational revival and book writing. But, also with his interest, his famous student and the one who know as Swadru-Shariah Maulana Hazrat Mufti Amjad Ali Aazmi was elected as Grand Mufti.^[9] His book written on the basis of Hanafi fiqh, Bahar-e-Shariat was a famous reference on this subject. Along with him, Allama Mustafa Raza Khan Qadri s/o. Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi was elected as the Deputy Grand Mufti of India.{{cn|date=March 2019}} Later on, he became the Grand Mufti as well. He was the Grand Mufti of India at the time period of Indira Gandhi as well. He came with a very strong protest against the Family Planning Program suggested by the government at that time.
