The line operates every 30 minutes during peak hours and 60 minutes all other times. Both Route G12 and G14 trips are roughly 55 minutes. Both routes provide service between New Carrollton & Greenbelt connecting travelers to both communities without having to enter Washington, D.C. by train. HistoryT15, T16, & T17The T16 and T17 were the original Greenbelt-New Carrollton Line before the G12, G13, G14, and G16. The T16 ran Mondays and Saturdays while the T17 only had rush-hour service. Both buses ran at different times and the T17 only served Goddard Corporate Park. The T16 & T17 originally ran to Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood station until 1978 when both routes were rerouted to New Carrollton in 1978.[1] The T15 was originally the Bowie-Belair Shuttle before being replaced by the T12. The T15 also originally served Crofton until being replaced by the B27 around the 1990s. The T15 joined the T16 & T17 around the & 1990s and was discontinued around the early 2000s being replaced by the T16/T17.[2] Reconstructing Greenbelt ServiceThe G12 & G14 were introduced in 2010 along with the former G13 and G16 in an effort to restructure bus lines in Greenbelt, Maryland due to it being controversial over the years due to lack of services. The proposal was mentioned as part of Metro's systemwide bus and rail cuts proposed during a budget crisis in spring of 2010. The Metro Board then took all service cuts off the table before approving the budget for this fiscal year. Alterations to Greenbelts bus service came back up at the request of the City and Prince George's County.[3][4] The City Council supported the changes mainly because they feared that if changes were not made, Greenbelt would be at the top of the list for service reductions during the next budget cycle. WMATA staff wanted to reconstructive the routes because they felt that resources could be used more efficiently. At the time of the announcement, only the 81, R3, C2, R12, and the T16/T17 were running into Greenbelt.[5] Introduction of the G12, G13, G14, & G16In late 2010, WMATA announced changes to bus lines in Greenbelt that’ll affect the current T16/T17. Major changes to the restructuring effort was the C2 between Greenbelt station and Greenbelt Center. The C2 was cutback from Greenbelt Center to end at Greenbelt station being replaced by the G12.[6] The second major change was the R12 being split into two routes. The R12 originally ran from Deanwood station and New Carrollton station but suffered severe bunching and scheduling problems. The R12 was split to only run between Deanwood station and Greenbelt station being replaced by the new G12, G13, G14, and G16.[6] The third major change was the addition of brand-new routes from both WMATA and TheBus. They are the R11 (which only operated weekday early-morning service only and does not serve Beltway Plaza like the new G13), and TheBus Routes 11, 15X, and 16 to help WMATA in the Greenbelt region. The 15X and 16 helped routing of the former T16/T17 on Hillside Road, Laurel Hill Road, and the portion of Crescent Road between Hillside Road and Lastner Lane, was completely discontinued and mostly replaced with service from Prince George's County The Bus Routes 15X and 16 which would both provide weekday service between the Greenbelt and New Carrollton Metro Stations, running parallel to the portion of WMATA Metrobus Routes T16 and T17 on Kenilworth Avenue, Crescent Road, Hillside Road, Laurel Hill Road, Ridge Road, Gardenway, Crescent Road, Southway, and Greenbelt Road. With the T16, T17, and R12's service on Hillside Road and Laurel Hill Road, as well as on Crescent Road between the intersection of Lastner Lane and the intersection of Hillside Road, was completely removed, with TheBus 15X and 16 provide service on the discontinued parts.[6] The last major change was the discontinuation of the T16/T17 routes. The G13, G14, and G16 would replace the T16/T17 routes. While both the T16/T17 served Doctors Community Hospital, the G13, G14, and G16 would not as the G12 will serve the hospital. Also, the G13 & G14 would serve Goddard Corporate Park on weekdays at all times while the G16 would not serve the park.[6] After the discontinuation, the G12 ran between Monday and Saturday (the same as the T16), the G13 was a morning rush-hour service only that doesn't serve Beltway Plaza, the G14 only ran Monday and Friday, and the G16 ran Weekday late nights and Saturday service only skipping Goddard Corporate Park. Most of the former T16/T17, R12, and C2 routing was absorbed into the new G12, G13, G14, and G16. A new "Timed transfer" was also introduced with the G12, G13, G14, and G16 routing. Buses will be scheduled so that a westbound bus on one route arrives at the same time as a westbound bus on the other route. Buses will have a scheduled wait of about 5 minutes to allow for the vagaries of traffic. For example, someone in the northern part of Old Greenbelt (the G12) will be able to reach Goddard Corporate Park (G14) by transferring at Greenbelt Center. Similarly, someone at Beltway Plaza (G13/G14/16) can reach Roosevelt High or Doctors' Hospital (G12) the same way. Changes went into effect on December 19, 2010 with new routings and the new routes came into service the next day.[7] Service Changes (2016)On March 27, 2016, the G13 and G16 were discontinued by WMATA and replaced by the G14 which added weekend service. The G14 would absorb the G13's Beltway Plaza skip in the morning before 7:30 AM. Also, the G12 and G14 added Sunday service for the first time.[8] Also, service no longer travels along Forbes Boulevard and Aerospace Road due to low ridership. Service Changes (2018)On June 24, 2018, the "Timed Transfer" at Greenbelt Center was discontinued by WMATA. G12 and G14 now run 15 minutes apart during peak hours and 20-30 minutes during other times.[9] References1. ^{{cite web|last=Feaver |first=Douglas B. |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1978/11/30/bus-routes-change-sunday-to-link-with-orange-line/74b7bfbd-4100-411b-b9eb-d51f9e4a0031 |title=Bus Routes Change Sunday to Link with Orange Line |publisher=The Washington Post |date=1978-11-30 |accessdate=2019-02-01}} 2. ^https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1980/04/10/metro-to-expand-change-bus-service-april-21/aa48a864-c17e-4ff8-af68-569550d7fa95/ 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.wmata.com/about/public-hearings/upload/bus_md.pdf |title=Public meeting |website=www.wmata.com |format=PDF}} 4. ^https://ggwash.org/view/4742/wmata-proposes-restructuring-greenbelt-bus-service 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://ggwash.org/view/6591/metro-board-will-take-up-greenbelt-restructuring|title=Metro Board will take up Greenbelt restructuring|first1=TransitBy Matt|last1=JohnsonSeptember 28|first2=|last2=201012|website=ggwash.org}} 6. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|url=https://patch.com/maryland/greenbelt/wmata-releases-new-bus-schedules|title=WMATA Releases New Bus Schedules|date=9 December 2010|website=Greenbelt, MD Patch}} 7. ^https://www.wmata.com/about/news/pressreleasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=4764 8. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.wmata.com/about/news/pressreleasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=6088|title=Metro News Release - WMATA|website=www.wmata.com}} 9. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.wmata.com/service/status/details/metrobus-june-24-service-changes.cfm|title=Metrobus Service Changes, June 24 - WMATA|website=www.wmata.com}} 1 : Metrobus (Washington, D.C.) routes |
