Griffin Alexander Stedman (January 6, 1838 – August 6, 1864) was a Colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War, He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 1859, and practiced law. When the civil war began he was commissioned as captain in the 5th Connecticut Infantry Regiment but quickly became a major in the 11th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. In the next year he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and commanded the regiment on several occasions; including the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He became Colonel in January 1864 and commanded a brigade during the Overland Campaign. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Petersburg and died on August 6, 1864. Stedman was posthumously brevetted brigadier general. He is buried in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut.[1] References1. ^{{cite web|title=General Griffin A.
