Steve O'Shea discovered it in 1999, and created the genus Enigmateuthis to contain it. Martin Collins placed the species in the genus Grimpoteuthis.[3] Description and habitatGrimpoteuthis innominata has been found in Chatham Rise to the east of New Zealand,[4] where it lives 2,000 meters deep in open ocean. Like other members of Grimpoteuthidae, G. innominata is most likely demersal.[1]This octopus' mantle reaches 43 millimeters long, and its total body is 156 millimeters long.[4] It has an internal shell shaped like the letter "U". Its lobelike fins and the shape of its shell help separate it from other species of Grimpoteuthis living in the Pacific Ocean. There are between 50 and 60 suckers on each arm of the octopus, and the suckers of males are larger than those of females.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite journal|last1=Lyons|first1=G|last2=Allcock|first2=Louise|title=Grimpoteuthis innominata|journal=IUCN Red List of Threatened Species|date=2014|issue=e.T162918A953226|doi=10.2305/IUCN.UK.2014-3.RLTS.T162918A953226.en}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q13647910}}{{octopus-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Bouchet|first1=Philippe|title=Grimpoteuthis innominata|url=http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=410363|website=World Register of Marine Species|accessdate=30 May 2018}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|last1=O'Shea|first1=Steve|last2=Vecchione|first2=Michael|last3=Young|first3=Richard E.|title=Grimpoteuthis innominata|url=http://tolweb.org/Grimpoteuthis_innominata/20123|website=Tree of Life Web Project|accessdate=30 May 2018}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|editor1-last=Jereb|editor1-first=Patrizia|editor2-last=Roper|editor2-first=Clyde F.E.|editor3-last=Norman|editor3-first=Mark D.|editor4-last=Finn|editor4-first=Julian K.|title=Cephalopods of the World: an Annotated and Illustrated Catalog of Cephalopods Known to Date Volume 3.
