The Hawaiian name for this plant is Apé or Apé-Apé.[2] DescriptionGunnera petaloidea has peltate leaves that are {{convert|3|-|4|ft|m}} in diameter on fleshy stalks that are {{convert|2|-|4|ft|m}} long and {{convert|3|-|4|in|cm}} in diameter. The stalks grow from a green rhizome that is {{convert|6|-|8|ft|m}} long and {{convert|4|-|5|in|cm}} in diameter. The rhizome is branched and can stand {{convert|1.5|-|4|ft|m}} above the soil. The plant can cover a total area as much as {{convert|20|sqft|sqm}}.[2]The flowers bloom in mid-summer and grow from a branched stalk that is {{convert|2|-|3|ft|m}} tall with {{convert|4|-|9|in|cm}} long branches. Petals are {{convert|2|-|6|mm|in}} long and grow in pairs.
