Although Habarwaa never referred to himself as a garaad, he has posthumously been referred to as such. Although the dynasty did pass to his son Shirshore, dominionship of the Nugaal valley was transiently passed to his brother Yahya. He had another brother called Hinjinle. After several intractable incidents related to xeer, conflict erupted whereby Habarwaa was defeated at the Battle of Garadag by the Warsangeli Sultanate. The cause of Habarwaa's defeat was threefold; the Warsangeli Sultanate had recently imported sophisticated weaponry to its territories while Habarwaa's troops were still solely using primitive weapons, it was the first northern Somali sultanate to import guns and as such had experience, and some Dhulbahante camps had defected to the Warsangeli side.
