It has up to eleven scattered leaves and up to twenty five relatively large green flowers with thread-like petal lobes. DescriptionHabenaria macraithii is a tuberous, perennial herb with between seven and eleven scattered bluish green leaves, {{convert|60-120|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|20-25|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Between fifteen and twenty five green flowers, {{convert|20-24|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|14-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|300-600|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The dorsal and lateral sepals are {{convert|10-13|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, the lateral sepals are narrow egg-shaped and spread widely apart from each other. The petals have two lobes. One lobe is {{convert|12-16|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, about {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and tapered, the other thread-like and {{convert|15-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The labellum has three lobes. The side lobes are thread-like, {{convert|18-20|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and the middle lobe is linear and {{convert|15-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. The labellum spur turns downwards and is {{convert|18-22|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long. Flowering occurs from July to September.[2][3][4]Taxonomy and namingHabenaria macraithii was first formally described in 1984 by Bill Lavarack and the description was published in The Orchadian.[1] The specific epithet (macraithii) honours Gerald McCraith of the Australian Orchid Foundation. In Australia, the species is formally known as Habenaria maccraithii.[5]Distribution and habitatThe whiskered rein orchid grows on levees in rainforest. It is only known from a few sites in the Kutini-Payamu and Kulla National Parks.[3] ConservationHabenaria macraithii is listed as "endangered" under the Australian Government EPBC Act.[3]References1. ^1 {{WCSP | 95046 | Habenaria macraithii }} {{Taxonbar|from= Q15483240 |from2= Q27828490}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =343}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web |title=Approved conservation advice for Habenaria macraithii |url=http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/threatened/species/pubs/87197-conservation-advice.pdf |publisher=Australian Government Department of the Environment |accessdate=26 August 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web |title=Habenaria macraithii - Whiskered rein orchid |url=http://keys.trin.org.au/key-server/data/08090a09-0d0e-410b-860c-020705070e0e/media/Html/Habenaria_macraithii.htm |publisher=Trin keys:Australian Trapical Rainforest Orchids |accessdate=26 August 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Habenaria maccraithii|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/536398|publisher=APNI|accessdate=26 August 2018}} 5 : Orchids of Queensland|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 1984|Orchideae genera|Habenaria |
