It has between three and five leaves at its base and up to twenty five small white flowers with a relatively long green green and white nectary spur. DescriptionHabenaria vatia is a tuberous, perennial herb with between three and five upright leaves, {{convert|60-100|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|10-18|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Between fifteen and twenty five white flowers, {{convert|10-12|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|15-17|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} wide are borne on a flowering stem {{convert|300-500|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall. The dorsal sepal is about {{convert|4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and with the petals, forms a hood over the column. The lateral sepals are about {{convert|5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide and spread apart from each other and the petals are a similar size to the sepals. The labellum is shaped like a trident and has three lobes about {{convert|8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and {{convert|1.5|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. The nectary spur is green with a white base, {{convert|12-14|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} long and about {{convert|2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide. Flowering occurs from December to January.[2]Taxonomy and namingHabenaria vatia was first formally described in 2002 by David Jones but the name was not validly published.[3] In 2015, Michael Mathieson validated the name and description.[4][5] The specific epithet (vatia) is a Latin word meaning "bent outward" or "bowlegged".[6]Distribution and habitatThe curved rein orchid grows with grasses and low shrubs in woodland on Moa Island and other Torres Strait Islands.[2][5] ConservationHabenaria vatia is listed as "vulnerable" under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992.[5]References1. ^{{WCSP | 247831 | Habenaria vatia }} {{Taxonbar|from= Q15482844}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book|last1=Jones|first1=David L.|title=A complete guide to native orchids of Australia including the island territories|date=2006|publisher=New Holland|location=Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.|isbn=1877069124|page =344}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Habenaria vatia|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/576983|publisher=APNI|accessdate=30 August 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Habenaria vatia|url= https://id.biodiversity.org.au/instance/apni/5152380|publisher=APNI|accessdate=30 August 2018}} 5. ^1 2 {{cite journal |last1=Mathieson |first1=Michael T. |title=Validating the name Habenaria vatia D.L.Jones ex M.T.Mathieson (Orchidaceae) for a threatened orchid species from Queensland |journal=Austrobaileya |date=2015 |volume=9 |issue=3 |page=461 |url=https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/assets/documents/plants-animals/herbarium/austrobaileya/mathieson-habenaria-austrobaileya-v9s3.pdf |accessdate=30 August 2018}} 6. ^{{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.|page =140}} 5 : Orchids of Queensland|Endemic orchids of Australia|Plants described in 2002|Orchideae genera|Habenaria |
