They lived in the Miocene. Two species have been recognized. Heliadornis ashbyi is known from remains in Maryland in the United States and Antwerp province in Belgium. The latter were from the Brussels–Antwerp motorway between Berchem and Wilrijke.[1] A second species, Heliadornis paratethydicus has been described from Upper Miocene strata in Vösendorf, Austria.[2] References1. ^{{cite journal | title=A trans-Atlantic record of the fossil tropicbird Heliadornis ashbyi (Aves: Phaethontidae) from the Miocene of Belgium | first=Storrs L. | last=Olson |first2=Cyril A. |last2=Walker | url= https://repository.si.edu/bitstream/handle/10088/1725/VZ_283_Belgian_Heliadornis.pdf?sequence=3&isAllowed=y | journal=Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington |volume=110| issue= 4|pages=624–28 |year= 1997}} 2. ^{{cite journal | last=Mlíkovský | first= Jiří | title=A new tropicbird (Aves: Phaethontidae) from the late Miocene of Austria | journal= Annalen des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien.
