Cartwright was the second of five children of former Northamptonshire and South Northamptonshire Tory and Conservative MP William Ralph Cartwright and Julia Frances Aubrey, daughter of Richard Aubrey.[3] He married Jane Holbech, daughter of former Banbury MP William Holbech, in 1853 at Farnborough in Warwickshire.[4] After education at Eton College, Cartwright first joined the army as an ensign in the Grenadier Guards in 1832, rising to captain in 1846, and colonel in 1854. He sold out in 1857.[5][4][2] Cartwright followed his father into politics when he was elected MP for South Northamptonshire at a by-election in 1858. He held the seat until he stood down in 1868.[6][7][8] References1. ^{{Rayment-hc|n|3|date=March 2018}} 2. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Clark|first1=Rupert|title=A Military History of Aynho: 600 BC to 2012|url=http://www.aynho.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/A_Military_History_of_Aynho.pdf|website=Aynho|publisher=Aynho Parish Council|accessdate=11 March 2018|page=33|date=2014}} 3. ^{{cite book|author1=Burke, John|author2=Burke, Bernard|authorlink1=John Burke (author)|authorlink2=Bernard Burke|title=A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain & Ireland, Volume 1|date=1847|publisher=Henry Colburn|page=193|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=C8fTAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA193&lpg=PA193&dq=henry+cartwright+1814+1890+northamptonshire&source=bl&ots=WaIVsDnRr2&sig=9TtttLC_xDfzqSNs01B-p8Sgs0I&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjhlbfljuXZAhVLDMAKHZD7APYQ6AEIVTAJ#v=onepage&q=henry%20cartwright%201814%201890%20northamptonshire&f=true|accessdate=11 March 2018}} 4. ^1 {{cite news|title=Bulletins|url=http://archive.spectator.co.uk/article/24th-december-1853/18/bulteu3|accessdate=11 March 2018|work=The Spectator|date=4 December 1853|page=18}} 5. ^1 {{cite web|last1=Frecker|first1=Paul|title=Colonel Cartwright MP|url=http://www.paulfrecker.com/pictureDetails.cfm?pagetype=library&typeID=21&ID=3185|website=19th Century Photography|accessdate=11 March 2018}} 6. ^{{cite book|editor1-last=Craig|editor1-first=F.
