Life and careerHenry Cotterill was one of the 17 children of the Rev. George Cotterill, who became Canon of Christchurch.[1] He and his seven brothers were educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, and five of them played first-class cricket in New Zealand.[2] Like his brothers, Cotterill was a batsman, but he did not have the success at cricket that his brothers Arthur, Edward and William enjoyed. He captained Christ's College at cricket and rugby,[3] and was the top New Zealand school student of his year, excelling widely, especially in languages.[3] After studying at Canterbury College, Christchurch, he was admitted as a solicitor and barrister in 1878.[4] He was a senior partner of the Christchurch law firm of Duncan, Cotterill and Company until his death.[6][3] He served on the board of governors of Christ's College from 1896 to 1943,[5] and was also president of the Canterbury Law Society.[6] His first wife, Nancy, died at the age of 37 in October 1891.[7] In 1893 he married Adela Ronalds.[6] She survived him, along with two sons and a daughter.[5] References1. ^{{cite web |title=Person Page - 44790 |url=http://www.thepeerage.com/p44790.htm#i447896 |website=The Peerage |accessdate=7 March 2019}} 2. ^Greg Ryan, [https://ir.canterbury.ac.nz/handle/10092/4691 Where the Game Was Played by Decent Chaps], PhD thesis, University of Canterbury, 1996, p. 147. 3. ^{{cite news | work= Press | date=21 July 1873 | page=2 | title= University scholarships |url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP18730721.2.12}} 4. ^{{cite news | work= Lyttelton Times | date=14 December 1878 | page=3 | title= Supreme Court |url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/LT18781214.2.21}} 5. ^1 2 3 {{cite news | work= Press | date=3 December 1943 | page=6 | title= Obituary |url= https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19431203.2.71}} 6. ^1 2 {{cite news | work= Press | date=15 March 1935 | page=16 | title= Notable career: Birthday of Mr. H.
