The overall winners were Lasse Kjus of Norway, his second, and Alexandra Meissnitzer of Austria, her first. A break in the schedule was for the 1999 World Championships, held in Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado, US, from February 2–14, 1999. Two-time (and defending) World Cup overall winner Katja Seizinger from Germany missed the entire season due to a severe knee injury suffered in June 1998 and then retired in April 1999 at just 26 years old, having already won 11 season titles (2 overall, 4 downhill, 5 Super G).
