BiographyGrunder was born in Basel, Switzerland in 1931. He holds a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics from the University of Basel and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, West Germany.[3] Honors and awardsIn 1979, Grunder received the U.S. Senior Scientist Award presented by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and in February 1996, received the Distinguished Associate Award presented by the U.S. Department of Energy.
